Sympathy Of Soldiers

Kid looked stunned silly, like he’d never had anybody worried about him before – which, considering what Miss Goldstein had mentioned, made a sad amount of sense. The alarmed explanations were met with a warm hand on the small of the other’s back – as much to keep him close while they headed back to join the others, as to offer a sense of stability and comfort in the wake of the sudden surprise of being confronted with aggressive concern.

“I hear ya – this time of year is nuts, you’d think people would learn to get their shopping done in a more orderly fashion, but its like this every year. Folks come from all over just to spend crazy amounts on all kinds of things they don’t need. Kind of wild when you think about it – whoop, this way,” He added, drawing Credence along with him toward what looked very much like a solid wall.

“Let’s hope this works – I mean, you’re with me, so it should,” In all honesty Jacob hadn’t figured out the difference between obscurial and wizard, beyond the fact an obscurial was a really powerful kind of wounded wizard. From what Newt had explained those wounds created a creature – a parasite or something – that eventually killed the kid, but Credence was an adult so as far as Jacob could figure it, he was more like a soldier with magic. Wounded, but figuring out how to live anyway.

It seemed the wall agreed, or didn’t really care Jacob didn’t have magic, if he knew where the wall was. Jacob didn’t mind either way, “We’re supposed to meet the others by a dirigi-something plum tree. I don’t have a clue what those are, but I imagine together we can figure it out, yeah?”

Harry stared at the small, innocuous suitcase now housing what had been, mere moments ago, a very ( incredibly ) large and extremely upset Nundu – which, first of all, “How did that end up in New York?” Considering the man before him had managed to capture a creature he distinctly remembered required over a hundred wizards to subdue, he had a feeling the very culprit for its release was standing right in front of him. “And why do I get the feeling luck had nothing to do with it.”

“Easy for you to say,” Harry grit out, still holding on to his head as he fought the urge to lift his body up and away from the intruding element. Although theoretical logic told him that withdrawing a foreign object from the body could cause more damage than it alleviated, in practice one’s mind tended to be far too busy screaming to remember theory.

It was his own damn fault really – he’d been so focused on the fight in front of him that he had failed to account for his back, and now he had to deal with the consequences of being impaled by – “The fuck is this thing, anyway?” He managed, still gripping the other end of it firmly in order to keep himself from falling further onto the damn thing. It looked vaguely like some kind of vine – strangely, he couldn’t help but think Neville would know what it was.

♬ – DIRGE (Severus)

– DIRGE – a habit, hobby, or obsession they can’t seem to shake.

Occlusion. Severus is constantly occluding every single moment of the day – this is as much out of necessity as it is out of habit so ingrained it has become second nature. He keeps his surface thoughts aggressively inane – especially at Hogwarts, where he first developed the habit.

The Marauders had such a preternatural ability to find him when he was alone as opposed to when he was with any of his dorm mates or friends ( which was exceptionally often – enough so that their ability to find him on his own was shockingly notorious and alarming ) he became convinced that one of them was a legilimens and began actively practicing shielding himself at school in the hopes of fending them off. While this ultimately failed, it only encouraged him to try harder – ultimately aiding in developing what would one day become one of the most formidable occlusion shields of the era.

While this seems innocuous enough, it leads into particular complications when it comes to Severus when he needs to be open and willfully allow his mind to be penetrated – either by Dumbledore or Voldemort, the two most powerful legilimens of the age.

While I have discussed the methodology of occlusion in depth already, it is paramount to understand that the tricks Severus employs on Voldemort are the very same ones he employs on Dumbledore, albeit for very different reasons. While for Voldemort Severus needs to present his hatred and his contempt, for Dumbledore Severus must present his commitment and his certainty and his absolute faith.

Which frankly – he does not fucking possess toward Albus Dumbledore. He DOES NOT trust Albus, not with his life and certainly not with his emotions. Albus has never once showed him anything resembling respect or kindness – he is, to Severus, absolutely no different from Voldemort – he is powerful, and has the world convinced they must bow to his whims. If Albus is a better man – Severus has no reason to know it.

So he focuses his energy on the people he does have that absolute faith in, the people he is absolutely committed to, and his absolute certainty that he will not fail them. He presents everything he is willing to present, and he conceals through redirection and the absolute and frank sureness that something is completely inconsequential in order to ensure it is overlooked.

While after a decade of serving as a teacher Severus comes to respect Albus, by the time of the second war when he is consistently revealing himself to the man in order to ensure the war effort succeeds – he is also absolutely occluding and keeping Albus from anything that might force the two of them to acknowledge the grim truths of their positions. Severus considers it better to maintain the pretense that his life holds value to Albus Dumbledore than to know for certain that it simply cannot.

“Curious as it is that you should see fit to inform me mister Silver, I am in fact quite aware of our Captain and his habits.” Good physicians were hard to come by and Severus had made it quite clear in the past that he was a noncombatant – with Guthrie and Vane out to cause as much mayhem as they could, the fact Flint had even permitted Severus to leave the Walrus at all was impressive.

“As I highly doubt he included you in the vanguard,” His gaze slanted over to the other man now, finally ceasing his forward motion in order to face the man squarely, “I can only presume that you want something. You will not earn my favor as you have the others, so perhaps try something a little more forthcoming and we shall see how generous I am feeling this evening.”

To Rebuild A Bridge

@carrionson continued from [x]

Credence was visibly on edge, something Gellert could hardly fault him for considering their last interaction being what it was. However he had hope that as surely as the boy had survived, their companionship could also rise against the test and trial of adversity and become something glorious.

His approach was careful – not afraid or even wary, so much as respectfully cautious. He could not afford to set Credence running when MACUSA was beside itself looking for them both, after all. Thankfully they were so focused on catching Grindelwald and concealing the act they’d had him acting as their Head of Magical Security for quite some time, they weren’t thinking to call out a search for Percival Graves just yet, which certainly extended this old mask’s usefulness.

The question – when it came – was innocuous enough, though it made Gellert wonder briefly just how much work this would take, if the boy thought from one misstep that all matters between them were somehow nullified. “You found peace back here before – with so much changed, does it not make sense you would seek out the places that eased you when the world was smaller than it is now?”

He would have gone closer, but he sensed that Credence was not yet ready to have him so near, and stopped at a respectable distance. “I haven’t forgotten who you are, my boy. Simply because you are the obscurial does not mean you are no longer Credence.”
