Concerning International Magical Schools
Mun Note: While this is a basic overview of how I handle matters, I will be posting a complete history and breakdown of Durmstrang on account of Gellert Grindelwald. I have spent a lot of time building the world beyond Hogwarts and as there is a lot of heated feelings regarding how magical schools work in general I felt it was time to address more openly the wizarding world my characters live in.
This rarely has any impact on threads – but it is information that may be pulled on or remarked on in passing and deserves noting. If you do not recognize it, then the information is MY OWN CREATION. Please ask me before making use of it for your own headcanons and designs. There are huge areas of the world missing, and schools JKR has written about that are not mentioned – this is because I have no characters in connection to those regions. This is not erasure it is just – not something I have built on or had reason to, so please bear that in mind as well.
Hogwarts – Trains students from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Is the only major school in this region – there are plenty of home schooled individuals who are either not accepted to the school or unwilling to attend it for one reason or another. Some counties have small schools, but beyond the basics of magical control they do not teach a great deal as more often than not they cater to individuals with weak magical cores that Hogwarts’ enchantments and the Ministry’s Trace were unable to detect.
Beauxbatons – Trains students from France and is in steep competition with Empúries, a school which accepts students from France and Spain on account of the fact the two Ministries agreed that the formal layout of the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees was more acceptable than the 1764 annexing of Le Perthus from Spain into France. While by Muggle terms the school is on French soil, by magical law it is still on Spanish soil and is therefore a Spanish school of learning. I mention this mostly due to Gellert, but also due to a certain family that tends to cameo through every life in one way or another, and the fact Empúries is under their jurisdiction, chances are it will end up mentioned at some point.
Durmstrang – Trains students from Austria, Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Norway, Poland, Romania and Sweden while in fact being in an unplottable location somewhere in Germany. While Durmstrang accepts students from all of these places,it is first and foremost above all else a German school. It is not the only school in the region, it is not the only school available to these countries, it is merely one of the most elite. Think of it like Oxford – people go there from all over the world, but it’s still an English university that caters to a specific demographic of intellectual individuals.
Ilvermorny – Is not the only school in America but is rather the top tier school in New York – there are other schools within the region as well. While I am aware that JKR has set this school in Massachusetts – considering she thought it would be a grand idea to have one school for the entirety of the United States of America I’ve elected to ignore a lot of her America related world building. ( While I will adjust here for people who have their own headcanons, on account of ABERNATHY I do have some ideas regarding this school and how it works )
Canadian Schools – While not particularly relevant at this point in time I will pronounce plainly that there are six schools in Canada and not a goddamn one of them is in a castle because that’s ridiculous. There is one school for the territories, one for British Colombia, one for the Prairie Provinces, one for Ontario, one for Quebec and one for the maritime provinces. I do have information on all of them but as I am not writing any characters on this blog at the moment who tie into them, I will let this be as is.
Corvinus Academy – Located in an unplottable county in Hungary, Corvinus caters to the same regions as Durmstrang on a higher institutional level. This is where trained witches and wizards attend for secondary training in order to apply for roles in politics, military matters, hospitals and trade areas. Particularly relevant because of Gellert, honestly.
Salazar’s Magical Communities – Self-sustaining regions in Rajasthan that are populated by magical and mundane individuals who pretty much haven’t had fuck all to do with the International Statute since it’s inception and only adhere to the laws of it when they travel to other lands, which is exceedingly rare for them to do.
