There was a dodge if he had ever heard one. Severus thinned his lips irritably, knowing better than to say anything to cross her at this point – it would fall upon deaf ears. So instead, he simply inquired ( perhaps too mildly ) “As it appears our earlier discussion holds no further merit, I can only take that to mean you have reached a new conclusion. Has my role changed in any significant manner, or should I proceed as planned?”
“Honestly?” Severus had already said that – but then he supposed she hadn’t really been paying attention in the beginning. Handing her the vial she would need for their guest he carried on as though he hadn’t questioned her at all, “Last week – I suppose Randall’s absence was inconspicuous enough to go unnoticed, but that does leave us with one less Ministry mole. Mind you only use half of that, by the way,” He added almost as in afterthought, “Any more and he’ll cease to be coherent enough to be of any use to us.”
“It hardly matters whose,” Severus pointed out wryly, continuing to wash the blood from his arms – he was drenched in it from nails to elbows, though his face was mostly cleared now, he had missed some along his neck and a fleck still clung like a macabre decoration upon his earlobe. The water was warm on his skin, too warm to be reminiscent of what it was clearing away with the scrub of soap and cloth.
His tone remained level, unaffected by the gorey mess he was filling the sink with as he continued, “I am not so amateur as to come in here covered in my own blood, however.” That would be like a wounded beast striding into a predators den and expecting something other than to be torn apart while it was weak.
“Well,” Severus really shouldn’t goad her, but seeing as she was being nothing but antagonistic he had little issue serving her some of her own medicine, “Seeing as I walk freely and am not on any wanted lists, and am, therefore, of active use to our Lord, I’d say it’s going swimmingly.”
“I do believe the name starts with Dark,” Severus replied with a falsely earnest tone that seemed to mimic Bellatrix’ own fervor for the man in the most subtle of ways, “And ends in Lord. But if you would prefer I take my leave, by all means, tell him you sent me away.”
“Because you’re such a treat to deal with today,” Severus retorted, too exhausted and sore to give a damn about the state of her mind and how quick she could be to a wand when prodded in just the right way. Bellatrix was volatile on the best of days, and it had been a week since she’d been anywhere remotely passing for a good mood.
Not that he was any better. Parlaying with monsters on the Dark Lord’s behalf alongside her was certainly on the top of his list of things he would have preferred a Cruciatus to, but here he was anyway. Additionally joyous whenever he had to slip off to report to Dumbledore on how things were going – the tightrope he was waltzing along toward his own noose was growing narrower with every passing failure to commit the brutes to either side.
“Maybe we can win our debate on account of your mood – I’m sure you’ll fit right in with their company.” He turned and faced her wryly, “Alternatively, you could help me research this and see if we can find a new means to succeed in our mission here? Just a thought.”
bella says they should find this imposter and torture the reason why out of them, she even says she’ll volunteer for that job, will you look at that!
Severus approves; he cannot afford to have some fool running around with his visage. He is also grateful for Bella’s bloodthirst, as it spares him needing to ask for assistance. It’s not as though it’s easy to hunt people down and torture them when you’re nearing exam season and students are losing their tiny minds over O.W.L.’s and N.E.W.T.’s. Being in Dumbledore’s shadow at times like these is a pain in the ass >:
bella wonders what happened to severus and who this imposter is
He would also like to know. Clearly it is someone with polyjuice out to discredit his reputation by making him appear approachable. How very dare they.
An annoyed little frown dragged on her sharp features at the observation, and she wanted to turn to Severus, a snap ready on her lips ( resistance, what resistance? They’re all dead. They are all dead and gone and wiped from existence and— ) and then he mentioned another name. And her frown deepened. Gaze flickered around, and found… Well, not what she was looking for.
Panic. She managed to keep it off her features for the most part, except for the slight narrowing of her dark eyes. ❝ It seems to me that he may have figured out a way to sneak past the spells you put up, Severus, ❞ she noted, frown turning into a sneer. ❝ How did that happen—did something distract you? ❞
“This oversight is no fault of mine, thank you,” Severus hissed, hardly about to take the fall for her. Had he been working with Lucius today, he might have fallen for his leader, but not for Bellatrix. She’d never given him cause to be that kind of loyal. “The wards held – he must have had a portkey and a considerable well of cowardice.”
Stepping deeper into the devastated room, he did not look down as he strode over a small wrist, refusing to pin anything to his memory, refusing to follow the pale trail of flesh to find a face just as disquieting. Surveying matters, he gazed up the stairs and remarked, “Or we may be lucky, and our cohort kept him busy. If not – then I suggest you come up with some orders quickly, because if we don’t find him tonight, we’re all sunk.”
CHARACTER IN GENERAL: Bellatrix is my all time favorite Problematic Favorite. She always gave me a le Fay bad end vibe – an incredibly powerful woman with infinite potential for good or evil, and what happens when that kind of power has control eroded into something bleak and defensive; I poured a lot of love into Bellatrix over the years and there is nothing I admire more than someone who picks her up and showcases the sharp facets of this raw jewel naturally designed to cut a man to the quick with their own interpretations of what makes that gem shine. HOW THEY PLAY THEM: From what I have stalked – and because I’m shy af with Bella rpers, I’ve actually been following this blog since I first started Severus, so that’s uhm. A fair amount of stalking, whoops << – Bubbles’ grasp on Bella is not only thoroughly unique it’s also deeply chilling and unapologetic. I can hear Bellatrix Lestrange when she speaks, the dialogue is so on point – there’s ruthlessness and an unbridled violence lurking beneath the surface in a lot of threads, but there’s also vulnerability, and sweetness, glimpses of a woman we never got to see. There’s a ship thread going on right now that kind of breaks my heart, because it shows a girlishness – a side of Bellatrix that was forcibly stripped away by Azkaban – and I don’t need to know if that comes to play in the verse or not to know that this is an aspect of who she is – and therefore a facet of her that’s been clouded and lost. She’s fierce, loyal, clever – she’ll cut you to the quick while teaching you how to survive – and in everything she does, she’s elegance and violence comported perfectly. This is Bellatrix. THE MUN: A total doll I don’t know what I was afraid of lmfao xD; Super easy to talk to and natter at and plot with! 10/10 do recommend.
