Lucky Timing

“Ah- unfortunately a slip of carelessness on the part of one of my companions, but not to worry, it won’t be happening again.” Queenie had been thoroughly apologetic, and ultimately Newt suspected Dougal was behind it, based on the way the demiguise had been looking at him when he left. Little troublemaker was almost as bad as the Niffler, at times.

“And you really are quite lucky I showed up when I did- Delilah frightens rather easily, especially around humans, and a Nundu may release incredibly toxic breath when she feels threatened.” He offered a smile, and wondered if this man was from the Ministry, considering his accent was decidedly British, and not American. That could be very very bad for him. “Newt Scammander, it’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance. You are― ?”

“That slip could have been costly,” Harry pointed out grimly, refusing to be charmed by the man’s easy if rather awkward demeanor. Nothing about him came across as particularly dangerous, but that hardly meant much in their world. Still, the name Delilah had his brows shooting skyward – and his posture relaxing incrementally despite his misgivings.

If that wasn’t the most Hagrid thing to name a Nundu he had ever heard.

Shaking his head, he supposed there was little to do about this situation other than the obvious point of arrest – when the man introduced himself. Newt Scamander. Harry wasn’t one for remembering authors, but with a name like that to make fun of all year it had certainly stuck in between doodling with Ron upon their tattered shared copy of a particular book –

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them!” He blurted it before he could think – “Shit,” He didn’t know if that had been published yet for crying out loud. “I mean – damn, sorry,” He held out his hand, “Harry Potter – I’m really hoping you’re the man I think you are or that’s going to be even harder to explain.” All thoughts of arrest fled in the face of something even distantly recognizable, admittedly.

“Thanks for the advice, but I don’t really have time to be laying around Malfoy. I’ll take some pain reliever and whatever else, but I’ll be damned before I spend the remainder of my shift in here.” Let alone the two days that were being insisted upon. “It’s not as bad as we thought it was anyway.” Which meant he’d be able to bully Clemence into clearing him for duty easily enough – if you weren’t bleeding or on your death bed, you could still be working as far as that old codger was concerned. There were some benefits to the fact not all of the older generation had retired yet, honestly.

“How else was I supposed to come up with it?” Harry’s incredulous tone was matched only by his perplexed expression, “Its not like I have a lot of free time to be concocting wild stories Professor – sometimes you just have to improvise. You know, like with Divination homework.”

Harry stared at the small, innocuous suitcase now housing what had been, mere moments ago, a very ( incredibly ) large and extremely upset Nundu – which, first of all, “How did that end up in New York?” Considering the man before him had managed to capture a creature he distinctly remembered required over a hundred wizards to subdue, he had a feeling the very culprit for its release was standing right in front of him. “And why do I get the feeling luck had nothing to do with it.”

“Easy for you to say,” Harry grit out, still holding on to his head as he fought the urge to lift his body up and away from the intruding element. Although theoretical logic told him that withdrawing a foreign object from the body could cause more damage than it alleviated, in practice one’s mind tended to be far too busy screaming to remember theory.

It was his own damn fault really – he’d been so focused on the fight in front of him that he had failed to account for his back, and now he had to deal with the consequences of being impaled by – “The fuck is this thing, anyway?” He managed, still gripping the other end of it firmly in order to keep himself from falling further onto the damn thing. It looked vaguely like some kind of vine – strangely, he couldn’t help but think Neville would know what it was.

“Really.” The tone was dubious enough, even if Harry glanced at the sky unconsciously, wondering vaguely if one needed to reach a certain age to achieve such answers from an otherwise unfeeling atmosphere. “I suppose I’ll have to take your word for it then, professor. I find most of my answers tend to be a little closer to the ground.”
