Meta Guide: Spells List

MUN NOTE: These guides were built in 2012 prior to any Pottermore expansions, and is how my blogs  ( @livinghorcrux / @severelydisenchanted / Severus ) address various elements of the wizarding world.

While some of this is Canonly Verifiable, the years these spells are picked up is of my own design, in some spaces based loosely on video game inferences and I am freely dedicating it to the fandom to do with as they please. Expand on it, ignore it, use it – whatever you want to do. Simply note that my blogs count it as canon – yours do not need to.

You may also notice that spells we see canonly cast by characters in a certain year are listed as something higher or lower on this master list. This is because after careful reflection on the matter, I felt that the particular spell in question was special for the canon involved, but that different rules should apply for regular students. Most spells like this will have notes as to why they are placed where they are, for better understanding of my choices.

FIRST YEARS

  • Alarte Ascendare [Charm]  Used to launch an object up into the air.
  • Alohomora [Charm]  Used on locks without magical defenses of their own, Alohamora will cause them to open.
  • Colloportus [Charm] The locking spell is used to magically ward doors and objects such as trunks from being opened by normal means. Most useful against muggles, and countered by Alohomora.
  • Finite [Charm] Stops all currently remaining spell effects that it targets. It is similar to Finite Incantatem, except it targets a specific object or creature rather than one’s surroundings.
  • Lacarnum Inflamarae [Charm] Used to summon a small flame.
  • Locomotor Mortis [Jinx] Stops someone from being able to use their legs.
  • Periculum [Charm] Causes red sparks to shoot from the end of the casters wand. Although Harry didn’t pick this up until fourth year, I believe it is a rudimentary enough spell that First Years could manage it – however it is simply not on the general curriculum.
  • Reparo [Charm] Fixes broken objects.
  • Wingardium Leviosa [Charm] Levitates an object.

SECOND YEARS

  • Arresto Momentum [Charm] Slows down or stops the movement of an object.
  • Diffindo [Charm] A spell that rips, divides, and separates objects into parts. When used against people or animals, it can can cause death or serious injury. It is not intended for this purpose. Students will be at risk of expulsion if ever caught using the Severing Charm in this manner.
  • Everte Statum [Jinx] Dueling spell used to send the opponent flying.
  • Expelliarmus [Charm] Disarms your opponent. A first level defense spell.
  • Finite Incantatem [Charm] A general counter-spell used to terminate all spell effects in a surrounding area. This spell is similar in to Finite, however, it targets an area rather than a specific object or individual. That said, it is ineffective on the Unforgivable Curses.
  • Fera Verto [Spell] Transforms animals into water goblets.
  • Immobulus [Charm] Renders target immobile.
  • Petrificus Totalus [Jinx] Full body paralysis
  • Protego [Charm] Used to cast a first level shield against a most low level jinxes and hexes.
  • Rictusempra [Charm] Tickles opponent
  • Tarantallegra [Jinx] Forces opponent to dance

THIRD YEARS

  • Arania Exumai [Jinx] A blasting spell used to knock back an opponent. Often used in dueling, Ronald Weasley found a more specific use for it in casting back Acromantula most effectively.
  • Cheering Charm [Charm] Causes a sense of mild euphoria in the recipient of the Charm. Over-use may cause giddiness and regrettable silliness.
  • Epoximise [Charm] Used to bind two objects together, the Sticking Charm is often used to hang pictures on walls in wizarding homes.
  • Glacius [Charm] Used to put out fires and create ice blocks.
  • Impervius [Charm] A spell used to prevent a substance being affected by another to some degree, such as glasses from rain or robes from Potions ingredient spills.
  • Lumos [Charm] Creates a light at the tip of ones wand.
  • Lumos Maxima [Charm] Creates a large ball of light from the tip of ones wand that can be cast away from the wand in order to illuminate a larger area.
  • Multicorfors [Charm] Causes an object or animal to change colors.
  • Nox [Charm] Extinguishes Lumos.
  • Riddikulus [Spell] Used against Boggarts in order to transform them into something the caster considers funny.
  • Scourgify [Charm] Used to clean up most basic messes.
  • Tollere Umor [Charm] Used to remove moisture from hair and clothing.
  • Waddiwasi [Jinx] Used to removes impacted objects (such as gum in keyholes) and launches them through the air at the will of the caster.

FOURTH YEARS

  • Abdepulso [Charm] Second level disarming spell, it is a stronger version of Expelliarmus.
  • Accio [Charm] Summons an object to the caster.
  • Ascendio [Charm] Used to lift the caster high into the air, or propel them to the surface if they are submerged.
  • Bat-Bogey Hex [Hex] Grotesquely enlarges the victims snot, give it wings, and send it attacking the victim.
  • Bombarda [Charm] Used to create small explosions. One of this spell’s uses are to blast open sealed doors. Hermione Granger utilizes this in her third year, however taking into account Hermione’s love of knowledge I decided this spell was actually above her level at the time. It just seems a bit strong for the average third year.
  • Contecto Tegum [Charm] Second level shielding spell, it is a stronger version of a basic Protego. ( original spell )
  • Depulso [Charm] The counter to Accio, Depulso is the Banishing Charm that sends objects away from the caster.
  • Engorgio [Charm] Causes the target to swell in size.
  • Ennervate [Spell] Used to reverse the effects of Stupify.
  • Furnunculus [Jinx] Causes a person to break out in boils when it comes in contact with their skin. The effects can be cleared by the Boil-Cure Potion.
  • Impedimenta [Jinx] Impedes forward motion, either slowing or stopping an opponent.
  • Point Me [Charm] Spins the casters wand in the palm of their hand, to point in the direction of an object or person they are looking for. The wand acts as a compass until it is found, but the range of the spell is not exceptionally far. Example of range: Second floor to fourth floor, yes. Hogwarts to Hogsmeade, no.
  • Reducio [Charm] Counter to Engorgio, Reducio causes the target to shrink back to its original size.
  • Reducto [Hex] Used to blast objects into pieces. The number of pieces may vary, depending on the power of the casting. If used with extreme force, the object may disintegrate.
  • Stupefy [Hex] Manifested as a jet of red sparks, the Stunning Spell renders an opponent unconscious and may, at times, move objects back.
  • Serpensortia [Curse] Used to cast a serpent from the users wand, this spell has the potential to be incredibly dangerous. Although used by Draco Malfoy in his second year, it was mentioned that it was an unusual casting. I believe this spell is too much for average second years and have chosen to list it as fourth instead. Note that this spell should not be used regularly as it is certainly not on the Hogwarts curriculum.
  • Vipera Evanesca [Spell] The counter-curse and Untransfiguration for Serpensortia that causes the conjured snake to vanish.

FIFTH YEARS

  • Aparecium [Spell] Transfiguration based, this spell forces invisible ink to appear.
  • Bombarda Maxima [Charm] A stronger level than a normal Bombarda, this spell creates more concentrated explosions and is fairly destructive.
  • Flagrate Creates a burning trail in the air that fades with time. It can be directed in any shape or direction the caster chooses using their wand.
  • Flame Freezing Spell [Charm] Changes the effects of a fire, so that instead of burning, it feels like a warm summer breeze. The caster may feel a gentle tickling sensation.
  • Inanimatus Conjurus [Spell] Used to animate various inanimate objects. The size of the object and the length of time in which it is animate depends on the concentration and strength of the castor.
  • Quietus [Charm] Quietus is the counter-spell to of Sonorus, the incantation which amplifies a person’s voice.
  • Silencio [Charm] Renders the victim temporarily mute. It works on both Beasts and Beings.
  • Sonarus [Charm] This spell amplifies someone’s voice. The voice will become loud enough to be heard over a great distance.
  • Tempus [Charm] When cast, it forms a gold colored mist that tells the current time.

SIXTH YEARS

  • Aguamenti [Charm] Conjures a jet of clear, pure water from the tip of the caster’s wand. Depending on the casters concentration and intentions, this charm can be a simple jet of water to a wave.
  • Confundus Charm [Jinx] Causes a person or animated object to become highly confused. Depending on the caster’s concentration and intentions, the spell can cause varying degrees of inflicted confusion, ranging from tricking a person about a specific issue to making them lose all semblance of common sense, even to the point of endangering themselves.
  • Evanesco [Spell] The Vanishing Spell things and living beings to Vanish.
  • Incarcerous [Hex] A spell that conjures ropes, which then bind the victim.
  • Oppugno [Charm] Directs an object or individual to attack the victim. This spell will cause conjured creatures or other moveable objects under the control of the caster to attack the target.
  • Orchideous [Spell] A Transfiguration spell that conjures a bouquet of flowers from the end of the caster’s wand.
  • Permanent Sticking Charm [Charm] An advanced form of Epoximise, this spell permanently binds two objects together, and depending on the strength of the caster, will not be removed regardless of the amount of Finites are cast at it.
  • Specialis Revelio [Charm] Used to identify the ingredients of the target potion or the enchantments on a target object.
  • Tergeo [Charm] A cleaning spell used to siphon off blood, dust, grease and probably many other things. It is similar to the Scouring Charm.

SEVENTH YEARS

  • Bubble-Head Charm [Charm] The most effective spell for breathing underwater or in any environment where fresh air is hard to gather, it forms a bubble around ones head that allows for fresh air and minor protection from falling objects.
  • Conjunctivitis Curse [Hex] Causes irritation in the target’s eyes, causing them to swell shut as though the victim has contracted ‘pink eye’.
  • Episkey [Charm] A healing spell that heals relatively minor injuries such as broken toes and noses. It causes a cold-hot sensation as the bone is reset. Though used by Luna Lovegood in the film adaptation, it was Nymphadora in the books and as such, I felt that a healing spell was more suited to graduating students than to sixth years, as Healing is a highly complex practice.
  • Galaciticus [Jinx] Causes the air around the intended target to grow cold and all moisture in the area to solidify before blasting the intended target backwards with a pelting force of hail to follow. Without the correct amount of power, this spell will simply make the air cold, or will push the target back.
  • Gemini Jinx [Jinx] Causes anything someone touches to multiply. Extremely useful for vault protection.
  • Imperturbable Charm [Charm] Creates an invisible barrier around a target, which can be detected if something thrown at said object bounces away from it.
  • Meteolojinx Recanto [Spell] Used to counter weather effect charms.
  • Supersensory Charm [Charm] Cast upon ones self, this spell is used to give the caster enhanced senses.
  • Undetectable Extension Charm [Charm] Used to make things bigger on the inside only and is able to go undetected.

ADULTS ONLY

  • Adescire [Spell] Sends a memory of the caster at a chosen recipient. Generally used to teach and build Legilimency and Occlumency skills, when used in a battle situation Adescire can cause distraction and confusion as the recipient is bombarded by unexpected imagery. ( original spell! )
  • Anapneo [Spell] A healing spell that clears the target person’s throat if it is blocked, an example would be if one were choking.
  • Animagus Reversal [Spell] An untransfiguration that returns an Animagus back into its human form. If performed on a non-animagus, the spell will have no effect and will not harm the animal.
  • Cushioning Charm [Charm] Creates an unseen softening effect on a target surfaces. It is primarily used in broomstick manufacturing to make the brooms more comfortable for riders.
  • Detegrae [Charm] Used to break through a second or third layering of defense; an advanced shield breaking curse. ( original spell! )
  • Disillusionment Charm [Charm] This spell causes the target to become a kind of chameleon, taking on the appearance of whatever is behind it. It is typically used to hide magical creatures or objects from Muggles. It can also be cast upon people – it doesn’t make them invisible, but it does make them harder to see.
  • Fidelius Charm [Charm] Takes a specific piece of information and implants it into a being’s soul. The one whose soul houses the secret is known as the Secret-Keeper. The purpose of this spell is to conceal a specific location, making it invisible, intangible, unplottable, and sound-proof.
  • Irasihaeme [Curse] Causes intra-abdominal internal bleeding, which can often be missed by healers if it misses the gastrointestinal-tract. ( original spell! )
  • Inaenmastoma [Spell] Used to spell vital potions, nutrients and even food into the stomach of a patient who is incapable of swallowing on their own, due to illness, injury or coma. ( original spell! )
  • Legilimens [Spell] Used to break past the barriers of a persons mind and examine their memories.
  • Muggle Repelling Charm [Charm] Causes an area to be unseen by Muggles, or causes it to be undesirable for Muggles to search or enter.
  • Occlumens [Spell] Counter to legilimens, occlumens is used to create barriers that block legilimancy users from seeing their memories.
  • Obliviate [Charm] Used to make people forget things they have seen or done. Depending on the strength, concentration and skill of the caster, it can erase as much as an entire life’s worth of memory, to as little as a singular moment.
  • Patronus Charm [Charm] The Patronus Charm is canonly described as being highly advanced magic, so much so that it isn’t even placed on the Hogwarts Charms curriculum. Used as a protection against Dementors and Lethifolds, the Patronus Charm is summoned by the strength of a person’s happy memories.
  • Piertotum Locomotor [Spell] A powerful Transfiguration used to animate large objects, such as suits of armor or statues to do ones bidding.
  • Portus [Charm] Used to turn an ordinary object into a Portkey.
  • Prior Incantato [Charm] Shows the last spell performed by the wand it is cast at.
  • Pyracere [Hex] An offensive fire-spell that is far more user-friendly than Fiendfire, Pyracere casts a ball of fire from the tip of the wand that is preceded by a cushioning of air. The resulting effect is that a person struck by Pyracere is sent flying backwards while the flames cause damage to the area they once stood in. Used to knock individuals unconscious or drive them back and keep them blocked in by the flames. (original spell)
  • Unbreakable Vow [Spell] A magically binding contract between two wizards or witches, in which a third party bears witness and casts the binding. If the person who accepts the conditions of the Unbreakable Vow breaks them, they die, making it a very serious commitment.
  • Viscarae [Curse] Causes three gashes to appear on the victim’s body, crossing from shoulder to hip. If cast ineptly, those gashes will appear on the caster as well as the victim. If cast by someone with inadequate power or by someone coerced into it, the wounds will appear on the caster only. ( original spell! )

RESTRICTED SPELLS

All of these spells are either illegal in the wizarding world, or were created by canons and their usage is only known to those who are taught by the canon creator. Note that spells created by Severus are removed from this list, and if you would like to learn of them you’re welcome to see my divergent information on the matter here.

  • Avada Kedavera [Curse] Specifically designed for murder, Avada Kedavera is one of the few spells that cannot be blocked by a shield. When struck with it, there is no return.
  • Crucio [Curse] Specifically designed to inflict tremendous pain, Crucio is nearly impossible to block and prolonged exposure to it can cause irreparable psychological and nerve damage.
  • Imperio [Curse] The only spell capable of stripping a witch or wizard of their will, Imperio is nearly as difficult to block as a well cast Crucio. Depending on the will of the caster and the will of the one being held under, it is possible to resist Imperio to a certain degree. Note that this will not be a common occurrence.
  • Morsmordre [Spell] Created by Tom Riddle for the specific use of psychological warfare, Morsmordre is only to be utilized by Death Eaters, and even then, with caution. When cast, it causes the Dark Mark to form in the sky and hover above the area it was cast in. Morsmordre is the only reserved spell that can be used by a seventh year student, and only if they are a Marked Death Eater.
  • Veneficus Viscus [Curse] A particularly vicious curse, the Veneficus Viscus poisons the flesh, killing off nerve endings and blocking blood flow passages so that the limb becomes blackened and dead, like an accelerated case of frostbite. The infected limb must be amputated before the infection spreads to any vital areas or organs; there is no other way of stopping the curse. All who touch the blackened sections of a Veneficus victim’s flesh directly will find themselves infected as well. This spell is punishable by up to sixteen years in Azkaban; ( Original spell, part of Severus’ backstory. Feel free to ask about this if you wish. )

Meta Guide: Other Employment

MUN NOTE: These guides were built in 2012 prior to any Pottermore expansions, and is how my blogs  ( @livinghorcrux / @severelydisenchanted / Severus ) address various elements of the wizarding world.

While some of this is Canonly Verifiable, the majority is of my own design and I am freely dedicating it to the fandom to do with as they please. Expand on it, ignore it, use it – whatever you want to do. Simply note that my blogs count it as canon – yours do not need to.

Potioneer

A potioneer is an individual who excels in the art of potion-making and has learned to make a living off of it. Generally speaking, potioneers work within other organizations, such as schools, the Ministry and St. Mungos. Some potioneers do work independently as apothecaries, while others still will volunteer their services for a set price depending on the difficulty of the request. All potioneers have the following credentials to ensure to their clients and the Ministry that they are not working without proper licensing or knowledge.

A potioneer must achieve O.W.L.’s of ‘A’ or higher standard in Arithmancy, Charms and Transifguration, as well as a minimum of ‘E’ standard grades in Herbology and Potions. Their N.E.W.T. levels would be matching, or better, than their O.W.L.’s in these particular subjects.

Potioneers can also hold additional jobs and are not limited to merely potion-making. If you wish to expand on your characters career, see our sections on

Potions Professors, The Department of Intoxicating Substances, International Magical Trading Standards Body, Ludicrous Patents Office, and Diseases and Potions and Plant Poisoning.

Apothecary

An apothecary is a supplier of potions ingredients and pre-made potions kept under proper storage for the purpose of being sold in large quantities or for many buyers. They are established potioneers and have considerable knowledge of all their products and wares. One cannot become an apothecary if one does not meet the requirements of a potioneer.

Apothecaries are a sub-section of shop owners. They are bound by the rules of both shop keepers and potioneers, so keep this in mind during the creation process!

Potions Master

Potions Master is an officiated title given to someone who has contributed considerable work to the improvement of the art and science of potions making and has been acknowledged by the Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers as a Master in the field.

In order to be considered for a Potions Mastery, one must achieve O.W.L.’s of ‘E’ or higher standard in Arithmancy, Charms and Transifguration, as well as ‘O’ standard grades in Herbology and Potions. Their N.E.W.T. levels would be matching, or better, than their O.W.L.’s in these particular subjects.

They must then contribute considerable developments, essays and thesis to Potions Quarterly and other Potions tribunals in order to gain recognition for their work. Individuals who successfully garner research grants from the Ministry of Magic are more likely to be watched by the Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers, though success in their endeavors does not automatically guarantee that one will be offered the opportunity to take the aptitude and proficiency tests issued by the Society to those they consider as being good candidates for the title.

Curse Breakers

Curse Breakers are highly talented witches and wizards who are paid several galleons above minimum wage due to the serious and dangerous nature of their job. A Curse Breaker disables or counters curses in ancient tombs and other historical sites world-wide, in order to bring back gold and valuable objects that have been lost or locked away and return it all to Gringotts.

Curse-Breaker requirements include O.W.L.’s of at least E standard in Arithmancy, Ancient Runes, Ancient Studies, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions and Transfiguration. N.E.W.T.’s of the same level or higher are expected in the same subject list.

Afterward, one applies with Gringotts Bank for the position and if the admissions exam is passed, TWO YEARS of curse breaking education and training is undergone with the Gringotts Goblins. All applicants MUST be willing to travel, as there is no stationary position for Curse Breakers and very few places in need of curse breaking in the UK.

Dragonologist

Dragonology is a branch of magizoology that deals specifically with the dragon populations. A Dragonologist specializes in the study, care, protection and preservation of dragon colonies around the world, and are frequently called upon to herd a dragon away from a Muggle population, or to monitor a dragon in an unnatural environment. ( Such as the Tri-Wizard Tournament )

Requirements include O.W.L.’s of at least E standard in Care of Magical Creatures, Herbology, Potions, Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts. N.E.W.T.’s of same or higher level in the same subjects are also required. An application examination is required, followed by a physical and mental aptitude test if passed.

After which, the successful applicant MUST be willing to travel as dragon colonies are hosted all over the world and dragonologists are in high demand in many of them.

Magizoologist

A magizoologist is a wizarding naturalist who specializes in the study, care, protection and preservation of magical animals across the globe. They are well-versed in Muggle-distraction techniques and in the ways of animals, plants and environments and how the three interact.

Requirements include O.W.L.’s of at least E standard in Care of Magical Creatures, Herbology, Potions, Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts. N.E.W.T.’s of same or higher level in the same subjects are also required.

Magizoologists are rarely ‘free-lance’ workers and are usually working under Ministry grants or with specific colonies or shops.

Vampire Hunter

These individuals are not legally sanctioned and are privately paid mercenaries. To be caught working as a vampire hunter is a crime punishable by up to ninety years in Azkaban, as according to paragraph twelve of the Guidelines for the Treatment of Non-Wizard Part-Humans.

As a result, a character who employs themselves this way must be willing to accept the canon consequences of their actions if they are caught or placed under suspicion by other characters.

Huntsman

These individuals are hired by the Ministry to hunt down and capture wild and dangerous magical creatures. They are, at times, sanctioned to put that creature down on the spot if they are able. These creatures are always four [X] or higher in categorization and are made more dangerous by whatever ailment has caused them to go rogue. Huntsman are typically Aurors, Hit Wizards and even Curse Breakers, or have similar credentials.

Huntsman are paid on a commission structure; per creature they capture and or kill they receive an immediate payment.

Professional Quidditch Players

These individuals are hired by the Quidditch League and paid standard rates for professional players. Regardless of what team someone plays on, the rates are standardized according to the stipulations set forth by the Department of Magical Games and Sports. A full list of teams can be found HERE.

Meta Guide: Shopkeepers II

MUN NOTE: These guides were built in 2012 prior to any Pottermore expansions, and is how my blogs  ( @livinghorcrux / @severelydisenchanted / Severus ) address various elements of the wizarding world.

The majority of this piece is canonly verifiable through the wiki and is simply here for my own reference; that said please double check these pieces as some may involve information that is not in fact canon!

Knockturn Alley

BORGIN & BURKES
A wizarding pawn shop that has the exclusive and beneficial service of coming in to pick up anything that may cause the Ministry to question a bit too much into one’s lifestyle, Borgin & Burkes employees are masters of hiding their worst wares during Ministry inspection and of course, in keeping the confidentiality of those who sell to them.

MORIBUND’S
Located next to the The Spiny Serpent, and opposite Borgin and Burkes, this shop was named after its original founder, Moribund. Catering to witches and wizards of small budgets and broad plans, Moribund’s provides its patrons with difficult to obtain and steep to afford artifacts on affordable payment plans. Very much your wizard version of a loan office, Moribund’s patrons can dress to impress, decorate to astonish or give a gift well beyond their means if they happen to pick it up here – and agree to the terms and conditions of the monthly rates, return policies and of course consequences for failing to deliver on monthly payments.

THE SPINY SERPENT
An exotic wares supplier, the Spiny serpent caters to the affluent witches and wizards, providing rare (and often illegal) artifacts for interior home design and defenses. The door is permanently locked – only patrons with the password may enter, and only those with the correct connections may obtain said password.

Otherwise, there are many ready-made instruments at the shop.

A fine clothing shop that caters to every conceivable budget, Gladrags prides itself on being able to provide excellent clothing options and designs to wizarding folk no matter what. Gladrag’s employees are capable of designing some of the most fashionable clothes with some of the most expensive – as well as some of the cheapest – materials. As the capability to work with silk or cotton is something most in the field have a difficult time switching with, all of Gladrags employees are some of the most inventive designers and tailors around.

HONEYDUKES
One of the most famous attractions of Hogsmeade village is her world renowned magical sweet-shop, Honeydukes. Famous for its chocolate and wild-flavor sweets, Honeydukes is always on the cutting edge of sweets and treats. Its creation and testing team members are high-class pâtissiers and professional confectioners who have had at least five years experience in the field prior to hire.

MADAM PUDDIFOOT’S TEA SHOP
The number one location for Hogwarts teenagers and couples, Madam Puddifoot’s is a niche cafe that caters to the frill and delicacy desired by young women. They have an accomplished pâtissier who designs all their feature sweets and a baker who provides all the customary crumpets to go along with ones tea.

POTAGE’S CAULDRON SHOP
Hogsmeade’s local branch of Potage’s, this location Is considerably smaller and only has room for two on staff employees. The owner checks in from time to time, or will cover a shift when necessary, but the apothecary and the potioneer handle all of the merchandising and sales. A firm knowledge of cauldrons and their uses with various types of potions and ingredients, as well as their effects on either is required, thus why Potage’s only hires credited apothecaries and potioneers.

SCRIVENSHAFT’S QUILL SHOP
A stationary store that caters to Hogwarts staff and students, Scrivenshaft’s carries everything from your regular writing materials to personalized parchments and specialized quills. A relatively small shop, Scrivenshaft employs a single sales representative who is trained to have sound knowledge of the store’s products, and a single Fletcher who designs, cuts and manages the quill center.

SPINTWITCHES
A sporting goods shop in Hogsmeade, Spintwitches dedicates itself to providing the best in broom care products and Quidditch team paraphernalia. It is the merchandiser’s job to ensure that the favored teams for the Quidditch World Cup are always being showcased, and that those teams are shifted according to public opinion.

THE HOG’S HEAD
Perhaps the most disreputable location in all of Hogsmeade, the Hog’s Head is a dingy, dirty hovel of a pub, whose bartenders haven’t been bothered to clean since their hiring date and Aberforth simply hasn’t been bothered to bug them over it. Could be he’s hired on some new, more willing to clean folk recently, but that’s all whispers on the wind really.

THE MAGIC NEEP
A grocer for the various needs of the magical community living within Hogsmeade, the Magical Neep has everything from your typical food needs to household cleaners for the day-to-day witch and wizard. Merchandisers are in charge of keeping stock full and presentable, ensuring that sales are competitive and relevant, and educating the sales representatives on products. Sales representatives assist customers in finding what they need, upsell products according to what a customer is purchasing and perform sales transactions.

THE THREE BROOMSTICKS
The Three Broomsticks is the most popular pub in Hogsmeade, as well as the town’s only inn. Frequently utilized by visiting family not wishing to bunk down at Hogwarts, the Three Broomsticks prides itself on clean and comfortable rooms, excellent food and drink and superior customer service. Bartenders are expected to have knowledge of wizarding drinks and mixes as well as a decent knowledge of wizard-favorite Muggle mixes. Its waitresses are expected to be friendly, quick and efficient, while the cleaner is expected to be on time every day and on top of the bedrooms as soon as possible. The chef at the Three Broomsticks has had at least five years experience as a cook, while the line cook has at least two. Bouncers are expected to be stern, but not totalitarian – even the worst drunkards are valued customers in their own right.

TOMES AND SCROLLS
A specialty bookshop established in 1768, Tomes and Scrolls provides everything from wizarding fiction to best-selling How Two books for the practical witch or wizard. What sets Tomes and Scrolls apart from other bookshops is their niche market in ancient scrolls and texts from all around the UK and greater Europe. Chances are that long looked for first edition can be found tucked away at Tomes and Scrolls. Their display case and back room hold some of their most ancient (and therefore most expensive) wares. Merchandisers are expected to know what is on display and to be aware of all the products in the store. Sales representatives have an equally strong product knowledge and are familiar with the care needed for old parchments.

WISEACRES WIZARDING EQUIPMENT
The Hogsmeade location of the popular wizarding odds and ends shop in Diagon Alley, this Wiseacre’s location caters a bit more toward Hogwarts staff and students than the eclectic wizarding population as a whole, like its parent shop in Diagon. Here one will find all manner of odds and ends for doing one’s class wizardry, from new sets of scales, to star-tracking telescopes. The merchandiser must ensure that the most relevant products to Hogwarts staff and students are given the best showcasing.

WIZARDING WIRELESS NETWORK HEADQUARTERS
The most popular wizarding wireless station, WWN features some of the best music the wizarding world has to offer. Well known for its Witching Hour musical line ups as well as its innovative news programs, the WWN is featured in almost every wizarding home and as such, only hires the best radio personalities the industry has to offer.

ZONKO’S JOKE SHOP
The favorite shop of Hogwarts students, Zonko’s is perhaps infamous among the school’s faculty for its wild joke products, ranging from Dungbombs to Sugar Quills. Due to the current events in the wizarding world in regards to the Dark Lord’s return, Zonko’s has downsized its employee base considerably, and seems to be under threat of going under or closing altogether.

Shopkeepers

Shopkeepers are responsible for maintaining the stock and merchandise of the store, placing work orders for additional products and services, managing the budget, ensuring that the store is kept up to Ministry safety and work policy guidelines, and contacting the Ludicrous Patents Office for any and all new products or merchandise that are created within the store.

Shopkeepers must have a strong sense of money management, merchandising and entrepreneurship, and must be willing to comply to the Ministry guidelines in regards to new merchandise and products. Magical retail is not unlike Muggle retail in that regard but is often an aspect of the universe that is overlooked when it comes to character backgrounds so it is something I focused on back when I was building originals.

Diagon Alley Shops

Eeylops Owl Emporium is a chain of shops that sells owls and the supplies (such as food, supplements and cages) necessary to care for them. Meta Guide: St. Mungos

MUN NOTE: These guides were built in 2012 prior to any Pottermore expansions, and is how my blogs  ( @livinghorcrux / @severelydisenchanted / Severus ) address various elements of the wizarding world.

How one becomes a Healer or Mediwizard was designed by me – the breakdowns and functions of the various wings of St. Mungos are canonly verifiable through the online wiki and other sources, though the amount of people per wing is again my inference.

I am freely dedicating this to the fandom to do with as they please. Expand on it, ignore it, use it – whatever you want to do. Simply note that my blogs count it as canon – yours do not need to.

St. Mungo’s Hospital

St. Mungo’s Hospital employs only the best Healers and Mediwizards the UK has to offer, and as such its standards are quite high. All St. Mungo’s staff are required to wear lime green robes with a crossed wand and bone symbol above the heart.

There are two types of medical professions available in the wizarding world. Healers, which are the magical equivalent of doctors, are highly trained professionals in a specific field. Mediwizards, the equivalent of a magical medic, are highly trained field agents who are versed in many areas of healing.

Becoming a Healer

Requirements needed in order to be considered for Healer training include N.E.W.T.s of at least grade E (Exceeds Expectations) in the subjects of Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, Herbology and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Once these grades are obtained, one must sit through an aptitude test that will determine whether or not the individual is cut out for the specialist training from St. Mungos’ educational Healing Division, as supervised by the Ministry.

It takes seven years to become a certified Healer. After the successful submission of the aptitude test, a Healer applicant will spend two years learning the basics of wizarding medicine and the rules to which Healers are bound. After this, there is two years of specialist training, in which the individual will choose their specialization and move forward.

After the specialization training, three years are spent doing practical study as a trainee within St. Mungos under their specialist ward. Only after all seven years of training are complete, final examinations written and all practical area tests passed will one be certified as a Healer at St. Mungos.

Becoming a Mediwizard

Requirements needed in order to be considered for Mediwizard training include N.E.W.T.s of at least grade E (Exceeds Expectations) in the subjects of Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, Herbology and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Once these grades are obtained, one must sit through an aptitude test that will determine whether or not the individual is cut out for the emergency medical training from St. Mungos’ educational Healing Division, as supervised by the Ministry.

It takes six years to become a certified Mediwizard. After the successful submission of the aptitude test, a Mediwizard applicant will spend three years learning the basics of wizarding medicine and how it is applied in emergency situations.

They will then spend one year learning the rules to which Healers are bound, as they too will be bound by the same laws. After this, there is two years of on-the-job training, in which the individual will be exposed to various emergency situations and typical on-site stations such as Quidditch matches in order to learn through observation and practical application.

After the on-site training, three examinations are to be completed; One written and two practical. Only after all six years of training are complete, final examinations written and both practical are tests passed will one be certified as a Mediwizard at St. Mungos.

The majority of this piece is canonly verifiable through the wiki and is simply here for my own reference; that said please double check these pieces as some may involve information that is not in fact canon!

Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee

The Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee is responsible for thinking up excuses that will explain magical happenings to Muggles. Unlike the Office of Misinformation, who becomes involved in only the very worst magical-Muggle collisions and liaises with the Muggle Prime Minister, this committee deals with more minor incidents.

An level N.E.W.T. in Muggle Studies is required, and N.E.W.T.’s of or higher in three other subjects is preferable.

Invisibility Task Force

The Invisibility Task Force is responsible for ensuring that magical creatures and places in the wizarding world are kept out of sight of Muggles. Their tasks include enchanting areas so that Muggles see certain things, or recall urgent appointments, before stumbling upon a wizarding event, location, or magical creature preserve.

An level N.E.W.T. in Charms is required, while levels in Defense Against the Dark Arts and Transfiguration will be accepted.

Centaur Liaison Office

The Centaur Liaison Office is part of the Beast Division of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. Since its inception, no Centaur has even used the Office. In the Ministry of Magic, the phrase “being sent to the Centaur Office” is an in-joke meaning that the employee in question is about to be sacked.

This Department requires a N.E.W.T. of at least standard in Care of Magical Creatures.

Pest Advisory Board

The role of the pest advisory board is to provide assistance with serious Bundimun infestations of wizarding homes, deal with serious infestations of Chizpurfles, take responsibility for the Ghoul Task Force, and maintain a pack of a dozen albino bloodhounds, to deal with Nogtails.

This Department requires N.E.W.T.’s of at least standard in Care of Magical Creatures and Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Office of Misinformation

Only employed during the worst magical-Muggle collisions, when an incident is so obviously magical in nature that Muggle authorities have a hard time explaining it. In such cases, the Office liaises directly with the Muggle Prime Minister to create a plausible excuse for the incident.

The Office of Misinformation has worked long and hard convincing Muggles that all photographic evidence of the Loch Ness Monster is fake, salvaging a situation that once looked to be extremely dangerous.

This Department requires N.E.W.T.’s of at least standard in Care of Magical Creatures and Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Department of International Magical Cooperation

This division is in charge of overseeing and assessing trading practices within the wizarding world, as well as passing international legislation regarding trading standards. A highly clerical position, employees of the International Magical Trading Standards Body are required to take a six month training course in legislation and trading standards before hire.

International Magical Office of Law

The International Magical Office of Law monitors the laws and policies set down by the International Confederation of Wizards, and advises Britain’s Minister for Magic and the Wizengamot on matters of international law in order to prevent contradictions between British magical law and its international counterpart. The Department of Magical Law Enforcement actually enforces the international policies and laws of the International Confederation of Wizards on British soil, albiet often relying on the advice of the International Magical Office of Law.

International Confederation of Wizards, British Seats

The International Confederation of Wizards is the wizarding version of the United Nations. British seats on the International Confederation of Wizards are selected by the Minister for Magic, subject to the approval of the Wizengamot.

Department of Magical Transportation

Apparition Test Center

The Apparition Test Centre grants Apparition licences to qualified witches and wizards, a requirement set in place to prevent the likelihood of splinching. One must be 17 to obtain such a licence and be taught and tested by a qualified Ministry employee. In the case of Side-Along Apparition, the accomplice does not require a licence provided they are taken by a licensed witch or wizard.

Broom Regulatory Control

The Broom Regulatory Control has the authority to determine what factors allow an individual to use and ride a broom. If a broom has been determined to be dangerous or tampered with to cause damage, this office will confiscate the broom.

Broom experts must have an level N.E.W.T. in Charms, and at least three other N.E.W.T.’s of or higher.

Floo Network Authority

The Floo Network Authority is a Ministry of Magic board that establishes, maintains, monitors, and regulates the Floo Network. Department of Magical Games and Sports

The British and Irish Quidditch League Headquarters organizes the annual Quidditch Cup competition, arranging the matches and the players who participate and is in charge of maintaining order at Quidditch matches. They can (and will) ban Quidditch players for overly violent behavior and they can also ban civilians from attending sporting events for displaying inappropriate behavior (Such as firing arrows from their wand when the Appleby Arrows play).

Ludicrous Patents Office

Although located in the Magicaql Games and Sports Department, Ludicrous Patents deals with all manner of new-release patents. They cover everything from newly developed joke products to improved upon or newly developed potions. This is a highly clerical position that requires a two year program which studies Wizarding Law, the litigations set in place for new patents, and the criteria that needs to be met for a patent to be accepted. Senior Patent Officers have worked within the division for two or more years, while Junior Patent Officers are newly hired after their graduation from the training program.

Official Gobstones Club

The Official Gobstones Club is the official club of Gobstones, a game that wizards and witches play. It is in charge of monitoring the annual Gobstones tournament, and employees of this office are frequently hired out of Hogwarts. This division runs the Hogwarts Gobstones Club and frequently offers members of the Hogwarts club positions on the official roster or even in the Ministry Department, depending on their skills at the game.

The Atrium
Ministry Munchies

Ministry Munchies is a small stand near the Fountain of Magical Brethren where the Ministry of Magic workers can purchase coffee, pre-made sandwiches, toasted bagels or some sweets on their way to their offices. An entry level position at the Ministry, Ministry Munchies is operated like a shop, and its employees are often Hogwarts graduates aiming to make connections in order to move to a new position in the Ministry.

Security Desk

Usually manned by one guard, this desk examines the characteristics of a visitor’s wand using a Wand Weigher. All visitors must present themselves and their wands at this desk upon entry to the Ministry. It caught fire during the Duel in the Ministry Atrium, and was the first thing to be rebuilt – the Fountain of Magical Brethren remains destroyed, however.

Magical Maintenance Office

Members of this Department are the custodians of the Ministry. They are responsible for maintaining the upkeep of the Ministry, maintianing the lifts, and ensuring that the Atrium fireplaces have adequate stocks of Floo powder. This is also the office that decides what weather to display through the Ministry’s enchanted windows and is in charge of repairing magic gone wrong within the premises of the Ministry, such as rain inside an office.

An entry level position at the Ministry, this office will hire newly graduated Hogwarts students who have N.E.W.T.’s of or higher in Charms and Transfiguration.

Department of Mysteries

The Department of Mysteries is a section of the Ministry of Magic that carries out confidential research. Most of its operations are carried out in total secrecy. Few wizards within the Ministry actually know what is located within this department, though it is learned that the various mysteries of the world are studied there: these include love, space, thought, time, death, and others.

The Department of Mysteries is unique in the fact it does not have sub-divisions, precisely, and that all of its workers are known as Unspeakables because of the confidential nature of their work.

The Department of Mysteries only hires from within the Ministry, and over ninety-percent of its Unspeakables come from the Department of Magical Law Enforcement – and almost all of those from sub-divisions of the Auror division. As a result of this, it is presumed that the N.E.W.T.’s required for an Auror are also required of Unspeakables.

Wizengamot Courts

The Wizengamot is wizarding Britain’s high court of law and parliament, created in answer to the Muggle Witengamot. The Wizengamot is made up of around fifty members, including the Minister for Magic, Senior Undersecretary to the Minister, and the Head of the Department for Magical Law Enforcement.

The Wizengamot is in charge of passing and sanctioning various decrees and laws that will have large impacts on wizarding society, and acts as a large body of control within the ministry that traditionally keeps the Minister for Magic from passing too many outrageous decrees.

The Wizengamot seats are typically occupied by high ranking members of the Ministry, members of the Hogwarts Board of Governers, representatives from St. Mungos, a single, well established Potions Master to represent the Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers and a single Youth Representative, between the ages of fourteen and sixteen to represent the voices of Hogwarts Students, elected by the Hogwarts Headmaster.

Meta Guide: Ministry of Magic I

MUN NOTE: These guides were built in 2012 prior to any Pottermore expansions, and is how my blogs  ( @livinghorcrux / @severelydisenchanted / Severus ) address various elements of the wizarding world.

While most of this is Canonly Verifiable, the majority of matters in the Auror Office and Hit Wizard department is of my own design; the Intoxicating Substances Division has been expanded on entirely by myself. I am freely dedicating it to the fandom to do with as they please. Expand on it, ignore it, use it – whatever you want to do. Simply note that my blogs count it as canon – yours do not need to.

Ministry of Magic

The Ministry of Magic is the largest wizarding employment center in all of Britain and has some of the most varying qualifications as a result. There are many entry level positions available for recent Hogwarts graduates, but most positions require application processes, additional examinations and then specialized training programs that have to be passed in a certain capacity in order to be approved.

Many new Hogwarts graduates are offered positions of clerical and scribal duty in various departments of the Ministry, which is an excellent way to get one’s feet in the door and begin networking within the Ministry, establishing contacts and getting your name known by various departments. Generally, if one is qualified for a position elsewhere and has networked themselves properly, the Ministry will pay for and provide the additional training necessary for certain promotions.

Working within the Ministry is a prestigious line of work and is one where positions are constantly changing. This guide provides a complete breakdown of all departments and subdivisions, as well as the qualifications expected for that line of work.

Generally speaking, in clerical positions, Senior representatives have been with that section of the Ministry for two or more years, while Junior representatives tend to be new graduates of Hogwarts. Most secretarial positions are available to new graduates as well, unless otherwise stated.

Minister for Magic and Supporting Staff

The first floor is dedicated to the currently administrating Minister of Magic and their support staff. These positions are among the highest in the governmental hierarchy, and are separate from the chain of command that runs from the Minister through the Heads of Department to the average Ministry employee.

All of the Minister for Magic’s support staff are individually chosen by the Minister in office themselves, or by the current Minister’s Senior Undersecretary. It is generally expected that all chosen executives of the Minister’s support staff have a minimum of five to six years working experience within the Ministry in order to even be considered for a position.

Office of the Minister for Magic

The highest position in the Ministry for Magic, the running Minister is the head of the wizarding world’s governing body. The position somewhat corresponds to the Prime Minister of British Muggles and generally holds the final say in all newly inputted policies, procedures and financial decisions for the Ministry.

The Minister is advised on wizarding matters by his (or her) staff members and by the other Heads of Departments. He (or she) also chairs the Wizengamot to pass Wizarding Laws, or to hear important trials, though the verdict is decided by a panel of jury, including the Minister himself.

Office of the Adviser to the Minister for Magic

A position set in place with the arrival of Rufus Scrimegour’s rise to office, the adviser to the Minister of Magic is a position for the succeeded Minister to take. The role requires a firm knowledge of Ministry and Muggle policies, and is designed to keep the Muggle Prime Minister up to date on the events of the war. Whether or not this remained a permanent liaison position for succeeded Ministers come the end of the war is unknown canonicaly, though my blogs operate as though it did.

Office of the Senior Undersecretary to the Minister of Magic

The Senior Undersecretary to the Minister for Magic is a high-ranking position within the Ministry of Magic, answerable only to the Minister for Magic. Their job is to ensure that all the administrative needs within the Minister’s office are tended to, and to uphold Ministry standards and policies within the other levels. The Senior Undersecretary to the Minister for Magic can at times be sent out of the Ministry to attend to Ministry duties in other institutions, in the name of the Minister for Magic.

Office of the Junior Assistant to the Minister for Magic

The Junior Assistant to the Minister for Magic is a high-ranking position in the Ministry of Magic, whose duties are to assist the Minister for Magic and the Senior Undersecretary. Generally speaking, this position is only held by individuals who have at least five years experience working within the Ministry. Percy Weasley was offered the position by Cornelius Fudge in order to have a spy within Dumbledore’s ranks. Although this gambit ultimately failed, Percy proved himself useful enough to remain in station under Rufus Scrimegour, despite lacking the usual prerequisite time frame of service.

Department of Magical Law Enforcement
Auror Office

New recruits into the Auror training program must first achieve N.E.W.T.’s at no lower than an standard in Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, Potions and Transfiguration. After which, they fill out a ten page application form that is essentially a mixture between an examination and an interview.

Should the application be deemed acceptable, the aspiring individual will be mailed a date for testing. On this date, a written competency examination will take place, followed by a physical aptitude test. If both are passed, the applicant is then forwarded to the final screening process of a verbal interview.

Once these initial examinations have taken place, the Head of Magical Law Enforcement as well as the Head Auror will review the successful applicants and choose those they feel would fit best with the team in the long run. After which, those chosen are sent to a special training program that takes three years to complete. This is where most Auror applicants drop out, as the training is extremely demanding mentally, emotionally, magically and physically.

Program courses include ‘The Decree of Secrecy And Other Laws to Uphold’, ‘Concealment and Disguise’, ‘Stealth and Tracking’, ‘Understanding Organized Crime’, ‘Countering the Dark Arts’, ‘Tactics and Strategies’, ‘Offensive Manoeuvring’ and ‘Effective Teamwork’.

All training courses must be passed with a 75% or higher in order for the trainee to proceed. If previous records show that one has done exceptionally well in certain courses but struggles in others, some exceptions may be made, so long as the applicant agrees to retake the course they struggled in.

Aurors are the only wizards legally authorised to use the three Unforgivable Curses. Due to the fact that Aurors have a licence to kill, coerce and torture other witches and wizards, only the most advanced students with the strongest characters will be accepted into the program. A power-hungry Auror, or an Auror with a temper problem, is a problem the Ministry has no wish to deal with.

Punishments for abusing ones position as an Auror are often just as severe as punishments for Dark Arts practitioners, if not more so. All uses of the Dark Arts in a battle situation must be documented fully, and unauthorized usage of the Unforgivables in non-battle situations is an offense that can lead to termination and imprisonment.

During the First Wizarding War, there were a multitude of infractions that the Ministry has long since buried – and the dedicated historian can find cases of similar abuses during the war against Grindelwald. These ‘extreme scenarios’ have shown that historically speaking, the Ministry will conceal what the Muggle world would refer to as war crimes in order to ‘maintain a semblance of order.’ This is considered a ‘dark history’ of the Auror office and is something that present peace-time heads work to overcome – how this history may come back to the forefront in the Second Wizarding War will be thread and verse based.

Hit Wizard Headquarters

Hit Wizards are a subdivision of the Aurors that comprise a team of highly trained wizards tasked with arresting dangerous criminals. The entry and training requirements for Hit Wizards are the same as they are for Aurors, however their training program takes five years to complete. Furthermore, they must spend two years in active duty as an Auror before they may join the active Hit Wizard team.

Due to the highly dangerous nature of their job, Hit Wizards have beds on reserve in St. Mungo’s at all times, and they make five galleons more per hour than an Auror, making them the highest paid position in the Ministry, after the Minister and the Department Heads. Where the Aurors are more like the Home Office, Hit Wizards are more like S.W.A.T.

Investigations Department

Another subdivision of the Auror office, the Investigations Department centers on investigation and tracking down dark wizards. This team is comprised of Aurors who have been in service for at least five years and who have maintained an eighty or higher in their annual Stealth and Tracking evaluations.

Magical Law Enforcement Patrol

The Magical Law Enforcement Patrol is tasked with general law enforcement, like with the Muggle police. This team consists of individuals who passed certain elements of the Auror examinations or training program, but for various reasons were forced to drop out or were not accepted onto the team – but were still deemed by the Auror examiners to be a worthy candidate for law enforcement. All M.L.E.P.’s have the same minimum qualifications it takes to become an Auror (5 N.E.W.T.’s at the least) and have undergone a two year training program.

Department of Intoxicating Substances

The Department of Intoxicating Substances is a sub-division of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and is responsible for making and enforcing regulations on controlled potion and drug licences and the importing and exporting of controlled potions, drugs and alcohol. They are to be up to date on new psychoactive substances, be they potion, herb or spell induced. They are also in charge of alcohol licensing, conditions, and prices.

Due to playing a heavy role in Severus’ main verse, and in all verses where he does not become a professor but rather continues to pursue his Ministry career, this department has its own complete guide, and is fully fleshed out.

Improper Use of Magic Office

The Improper Use of Magic Office punishes violations of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, including underage witches and wizards intentionally using magic. This office is in charge of the Trace, which allows them to monitor he magic used by those under the age of seventeen.

Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office

This office regulates the use of magic on Muggle objects and confiscates those which have been illegally bewitched. One of the laws they enforce is the prohibition on magically altering a Muggle vehicle with the intent to fly it – indicating at least two canons and their deliberate flaunting of the rules would have been brought to bear by this department.

Office for the Detection and Confiscation of Counterfeit Defensive Spells and Protective Objects

Created under the Rufus Scrimegour administration, this office is a response team put together by the new head of the Auror office dedicated to the prevention of the trade of fake and/or useless spells, potions and artifacts that claim to provide protection against the Dark Arts. My blogs operate under the presumption that following the end of the Second Wizarding War, this office continued for about five years before going defunct.

Wizengamot Administration Services

An office which undertakes administrative and clerical duties for the Wizengamot, the Wizengamot Administration Services team acts as a court registry; they maintain court documents, hearing dates, judges’ schedules, and the administration of legal proceedings.

There is at least one prosecutor and defense lawyer on duty every day to ensure that proceedings are running smoothly and to answer any questions on legal proceedings the other staff may have.

Animagus Registry

The Animagus Registry is a registry service operated and regulated by the M.L.E. department. Animagi are required to submit themselves once they acquire the ability to turn into an animal, and failure to do so results in imprisonment in Azkaban.

This is a highly clerical position and is one of the main offices that hires students directly out of Hogwarts. At least two N.E.W.T.’s are required – Care of Magical Creatures and Transfiguration being the best possible. Senior clerks have been with the office at least two years while junior clerks are newly graduated hires. Most junior clerks are trained and transferred quickly throughout the other departments.

Severus Snape: Death Eater

Mun Note: This post has been one that I have debated making for a long time as it is rather incendiary toward pro-Severus rhetoric as a general rule. As I have stated on countless occasions, my take on Severus is canon divergent – if not canon defiant in some respects.

However – one aspect of Severus that, short of a dramatic AU – never falters or changes is the fact he willingly joined the Death Eaters under Voldemort’s reign. His opinions and shifting position within that group notwithstanding, his initial choice was that of an active and willing participant and I will not ignore this simply as a result of his socioeconomic status and position as an abused youth – because these factors are direct contributions to why he joined in the first place.

Abuse does not necessarily make a person kind. While there are those who rise up as Harry did to achieve great acts of kindness and exude incredible amounts of forgiveness, not everyone goes that way. Severus was bitter and he was angry, but above all else he was vicious, ambitious, and violent.

These are aspects to his character I will never ignore, and this post is meant to piece together many factors already present on the blog in order to paint a more concise picture of why Severus became a Death Eater and what lengths he was willing to go to as a Death Eater for the people he cared about.

Factor One: Fractured Home

I have covered Severus home life rather extensively on this blog, so first and foremost we will begin with important links.

  • Family Dynamics – We will be looking more in depth at Severus ‘brothers’ in the social circle portion of this post, but this is a good general overview. A more in depth look at Eileen and Tobias is already linked in on that page.

  • Timeline Of Severus Snape – A detailed look at the abuse Severus underwent and Tobias’ motives behind the abuse that Severus himself is unaware of. Tobias’ actions against his son are as inexcusable as Severus’ actions during the First War – including Severus’ act of patricide. Knowing motives, however, provides context. Every action has a reason, and Severus was surrounded by more dysfunction than he ever came to understand.

  • Timeline Fun Facts – The TL;DR version of the previous link for people who prefer light reading, this post outlines Severus’ direct crimes in the first war.

Severus observed and was victim to rampant domestic violence, the dark side of alcoholism, the volatility inherent in a relationship that is born of the unhealthy belief of fixing someone and believing in apologies. He was a victim of pervasive poverty. Food was often a commodity. Eileen died of an easily curable illness because they could not afford the ingredients for the potion that to many, would be considered a minor expense.

Severus was easily motivated by the allure of escaping this life. He had an overdeveloped sense of debt toward acts of kindness that was often manipulated, but ultimately there was a desperate greed within him for something – anything – better than what he had, no matter how he had to go about obtaining it.

The growing hate he harbored toward his father, his inability to understand his mother’s refusal to leave and the obvious disparity between himself and those in his house and in general at school bred a deep and genuine anger inside of Severus that was hot and volatile. He lashed out violently as often as he could – and the Death Eaters harbored that hate and directed his violence toward outlets that suited their designs.

While Severus did learn to maneuver within their circle in order to maintain control over his own moral structure, what must be understood and what cannot be ignored is that Severus had REAL HATE inside of him when he joined. A deep, twisting, hungering fury that lusted for a means to expose itself – the Death Eaters provided Severus many things he needed, but the most unforgivable of them is doubtless the unhealthy outlet for his anger he held no other resources for dealing with.

This lack of support does not excuse his path. It is merely an aspect that contributed to it. I will never excuse Severus’ actions in the first war, merely explain them and acknowledge how they defined him. My Severus is many things – but a victim of circumstance is stretching it. He had hate that held no purpose, no direction. He had anger that he willfully used to attack people based on race. Not being inherently racist himself does not excuse him from committing horrific acts of racism. Doing it because it helped him heal doesn’t make it right.

Factor Two: Social Circle

When I was developing Severus, I started with him having five dorm mates – four originals and Lucius Malfoy, because we did not yet know the age difference between them. ( As Draco was born the same time as Harry, I was under the impression Lucius was the same age as Severus & the Marauders ) When the Order of the Phoenix was released, I rearranged Severus’ dorm and changed many aspects of his relationship to Lucius, while maintaining other ones. That, however, is a separate headcanon.

Taking the names J.K. Rowling provided us in Mulciber and Avery – and later. Wilkes – I applied them to the people I had already created as Severus’ friends. Even when we came to learn that Lily was a friend of Severus’ I did not change these people in his life because the significance of them defined my portrayal too completely to do so.

At this point in time, I was living in a group home facility – and I mention this because gang mentality is something that my group home covered very extensively.

For a bit of background, this facility is one of the largest in my country, with eighteen homes each housing 10-14 youth aged 12-19, supported living homes for youth aged 18+ to help them better integrate into society and apartment complexes for independent living.

This facility took in youth from all walks of life, from all social, racial and mental health backgrounds and had something of a sorting arrangement to ensure that various delinquent behaviors and mental health issues were placed together in order to better arrange for treatment. Many of these youth came from the kind of abject poverty that most of us have only ever read about. Many of them were plucked out of gangs, which was why gang mentality was such a heavy focus, in order to educate and hopefully aid youth from falling into the trap of them.

I built Severus’ friends based on the people my facilitators described and based on people I knew who admitted to fitting the profiles presented – either in group therapy or privately, during our huddled youth talks that so often happened when staff were not watching. The roles of each of Severus’ friends were chosen very specifically and all play active parts in Severus ultimate decision to become a Death Eater, so lets take a very brief look and go from there.

  • Eric Avery, Lucius Malfoy: The Benefactors
Seemingly benevolent to Severus, these are people who took interest in him even though he was of no benefit to them. He feels he owes them everything, that without them he has no hope of achieving anything on his own merits in a world where he is so outclassed by people like them.

This in turn gives him value to them, as they have now fostered for themselves someone who will respond to their whims. An attack dog, a lackey, a loyal sycophant – depending on the portrayal, Severus is all of these or just some for Lucius, and always all for Eric. This is not to say friendship isn’t present – these rotten cores, however, cannot be ignored.

  • Lucas Mulciber: The Protector
Lucas provided Severus with something he had never before experienced – a sense of security, and autonomy. Lucas taught Severus to protect himself and in so doing, was in many ways Severus’ greatest defender as a result. Severus attributes his skills to Lucas, meaning he owes Lucas for everything he has achieved in his own defense.

To Lucas, Severus is not as valuable. Their friendship is more pure than the one shared between Severus and Eric – which is something Severus himself is horribly ignorant of – because it is not rooted in debt. Lucas took an interest, Severus impressed him, and that was it by his estimation.

It ran deeper for Severus, deep enough that Lucas’ values bled onto him. Severus follows Lucas as surely as he follows Lucius or Eric, because he protected him and granted him autonomy by teaching him how to protect himself

  • Destin Wilkes, Lily Evans: The Friends
I include Lily here because she filled one of the most important roles, that was later supplanted ( albeit unintentionally ) by Destin. Lily fulfilled Severus need for love and affection that was so hard to come by at home and at school, where everything was a matter of favor curried and bartered and won.

His choice to cling on to his benefactors and protector had Severus surrounded by toxicity that was not safe for Lily, and this environment lead to Severus attacking her in the end – ultimately proving every misgiving she rightfully had.

Severus’ resulting depression, and later the loss of his mother, were not Lily’s fault nor her problem to aid him with. What Severus chose to do as a result of feeling as though he had no love or hope in his life is on him and him alone. That he clung to the person that pulled him back from that edge, is as much his own projections as they are a reflection on Destin who made the effort to begin with.

Now, whether or not Lucius preyed upon Severus deliberately is again, another headcanon. Eric, however, absolutely targeted Severus from day one. Now – as a literal child – Eric’s actions were not malevolent in nature. Eric is part of the Sacred Twenty Eight – he was a firm believer in blood purity, in that being pure made you better, and being among the Sacred made you stand above even the best

Eric Avery was the epitome of entitled rich boy, and Severus was fascinating to him. Where James Potter and Sirius Black saw something to mock in Severus’ poverty, Eric saw – in essence – a toy. Something he could pick up and put down at leisure – like a doll that had fallen in the mud, Eric took joy in improving Severus’ appearance, in making him presentable and treating him like a project.

A game in a sense of prince and pauper – and Severus’ absolute awe, gratitude and manner of treating the affluent fueled Eric’s ego. Severus made Eric feel like everything he had been taught to believe was true – he was better than others – but he also gave him a reason to believe that being better meant helping others to also be better if he wanted. And Eric liked the praise, the attention, that Severus threw at his feet for want of anything else to give.

Eric was the Believer of the group. He was the one who saw Voldemort as a saviour of a type of idealized pureblood society he was raised and – consequently due to treatment at Hogwarts – enforced to believe was being actively threatened. He was also charismatic and sociable, which were traits that Severus and Lucas both lacked. They were moths to Eric’s considerable flame, drawn in by what he offered them – a semblance of love, of kindness, that they so desperately cleaved to, by the time they realized how Eric used them, they were happy to comply regardless. Lucas, the soldier at Eric’s beck and call, Severus, the sycophantic shadow both felt by the time they recognized Eric’s dysfunction that they owed him too much to turn away.

Lucas was reluctant to share Eric’s affections and actively resented Severus their first year. This made Severus strive for his attention, and fight for his good review in fear that Lucas would take Eric away from him. It was not until Lucas saw evidence of abuse on the train leading into second year that things shifted between them. Lucas was not yet resigned to Severus taking away Eric’s attention, but he recognized a means of keeping Severus away from Eric in an effort to get Eric to forget his interest – aware, even then, that Eric was fickle at heart.

In taking Severus under wing, Lucas committed himself to some of what Eric received – but as surely as he scorned Severus for simpering to Lucius and even Eric himself, Lucas deplored the behavior when it was directed at himself. He took his frustrations with Severus out on Severus at first, all under the guise of teaching him – and it was the fact Severus never complained, that he bore up under pain with all the grim determination of a Mulciber that earned him Lucas’ genuine respect.

Things shifted after that. Lucas began truly training Severus, working hard to bring Severus toward his level so that he could be a genuine partner to fight against and keep his own training on an appropriate level. Lucas demanded of Severus something utterly new – self-respect. This command, this decree to find his own equal footing made Lucas in many ways his source of self-esteem. Lucas taught him to want equality, to fight and strive for more than scraps. He insisted only an equal could fight him, and Severus strove to become that equal, which in turn forced him to see himself more and more confidently as time went on.

Severus, as a result, bases an unhealthy amount of his self value on his capacity as a warrior, and his skills as a potioneer as it was an area he excelled at so immensely, even Lucas sought his aid in the subject, vaulting the importance of it to an astronomical degree and convincing Severus it was his area of expertise, the means to which he could escape his poverty on his own merits – because if it was valued so highly even by Lucas, then there was no question to him that it was one of his greatest attributes.

Destin was the outlier. He came from a moderately wealthy home, an acceptable background and a family that held certain expectations of him. He was expected to be studious, to obtain work in the legal or medical fields and to network himself appropriately provided doing so did not interrupt his focus. He was never the focus of Severus’ adoration, never placed on the same pedestal as the purebloods, and never really all that interested in him outside of course work and the occasional conversation.

He was not a friend of Eric or Lucas in a desperate way – they shared his dorm and it behooved him to be amicable, but he did not stand for certain behaviors and in fact confronted Lucas on multiple occasions for his violence, and even manipulated Severus to back him up by utilizing his friendship with Lily as a means to get him to pipe up.

Destin was not racist in a time when it was extremely dangerous to be vocal against Voldemort’s ideals, and was positioned well enough in society to feel secure in confronting those his own age on deplorable behavior. He was observant enough to know Eric was superficial and that something wasn’t right with Lucas. Severus he was ambivalent toward, but not so much so he did not notice dangerous warning signs when they bled out right in front of him.

Possessing a strong sense of morality and a slightly protective edge over his house mates, Destin kept an eye on Severus and because of this, was there when the other hit a low so dangerous, had someone not been present he surely would have died. On that day Destin shouldered responsibility for Severus in a way that eventually became unhealthy for both of them.

Destin fell into the same trap with Severus that Eileen fell into with Tobias, determined to save him from himself to the point he became more embroiled in the group. He became closer to Lucas, who seemed to understand the implications of what happened so much better than Eric, and together they formed a support group that provided Severus everything he thought he lacked in life. Security, stability, opportunity, and affection.

Factor Three: Personal Goals

Eric was falling more and more in love with the Dark Lord. He spoke of all the opportunities Severus could gain, feeding into his greed, his desire to stand as equal among his friends, and he followed Eric willingly to the fold because he wanted those promises to be true. He wanted a world where he would be above someone else for a change, a world where he was a man of value. Eric was seductive, speaking of the Death Eaters as a larger community of what Severus had in the dorm. Brothers in arms, benefactors, friends.

With Lucas following suit, Severus felt as though he was taking Hogwarts with him into the adult world. That home was coming with him and he felt safe in his choice. The pureblood rhetoric made him nervous, but he believed, because his companions did, that he could earn his way. Destin was pressured by the three of them, and when Severus and Eric showed their marks he reluctantly took to his own, to keep an eye on Severus, and certain that he could do this arbitrarily. That he could continue toward his career and ignore the mark on his arm.

He was wrong. In the end Destin found that Severus was not worth the weight of his own morals. Destin despised the men they were becoming, and he turned traitor violently. He died, and though he was marked the best of them upon his tombstone it did little to change the fact Severus felt responsible for Destin, and it made him all the more determined to protect what brothers remained.

Severus did many violent and brutal things in the war, to protect himself, to protect whom he cared for – but he also did them for what he could gain, for personal vengeance and for something as simple, at times, as an outlet. He has not forgotten the man he once was, the man he had the potential to be, and the man he knows he must be when the second war rears its head. That man was selfish, cruel, and petty in his bitterness, and it defined as much as it changed him.

All of which, combines to make Severus the man he is as a teacher, and why mine diverges in so many senses from canon when it comes to certain types of abuses – while simultaneously being no less monstrous. Severus is not a good man. He is not an evil man either. He is complicated, and morally gray and should never be labelled as either, for he will always defy both.

To reiterate for those who did not opt to click the links:

First War Crimes:

  • Creation of poisons designed for torture ( He created thirteen potions for the Dark Lord – seven poisons and six antidotes. The one without an antidote was tested on a captured auror and worked as promised; the Dark Lord required no antidote.

  • Murder ( 4 counts; three aurors – two by his own wand and one by poison; one Muggleborn )

  • Patricide

  • Torture ( 12 counts; he laid the curses down, he personally did terrible things to a dozen wizards of varying bloodlines who were either aurors, challengers of the Dark Lord or suspected spies. Only one was ‘just a Muggleborn’ and Severus cut that short after one Cruciatus by killing him and accepting the punishment for not playing with his prey.

Post War Crimes:

  • Severus can and WILL kill to protect his students. His only crime prior to the second war was to kill the father of a student after proof of rampant abuse. He regrets absolutely nothing and would certainly do it again under similar circumstances. Again, vigilante justice is one of Severus’ most dangerous mental states, because he convinces himself he is in the right and absolutely will not be stopped.

  • Severus continued to commit acts of torture, turn a blind eye to them, and even provide Voldemort with poisons throughout the Second War in his role as a spy. He found as many ways to stall as he could, and took as much violence as he could bear to mitigate the damage he inflicted in this war but he is no less a war criminal in the second war than the first.

AID: Deathly Hallows

Back into the regular swing of things ( to an extent ) this piece is more in the vein of OOTP in which I will only be covering areas where important changes from canon or special agreement needs to be made.

“Saturday … at nightfall,” repeated Voldemort. His red eyes fastened upon Snape’s black ones with such intensity that some of the watchers looked away, apparently fearful that they themselves would be scorched by the ferocity of the gaze.
Snape, however, looked calmly back into Voldemort’s face and, after a moment or two, Voldemort’s lipless mouth curved into something like a smile. “Good. Very good. And this information comes —”
“— from the source we discussed,” said Snape.

This scene is beautiful, honestly. Firstly it shows how afraid of Voldemort everyone is – while contrasting that with Severus’ sheer level of calm even as he is openly legilimized. This is done with such a subtle sense of familiarity – from the way it shifts from staring to conversation picked up at another point – that it indicates Severus is wholly used to the Dark Lord walking into his mind at any time and is always prepared. It further illustrates his ‘loyalty’ in a way, because there is no hint of nervousness to be seen.

“He lost an ear,” said Lupin.
“Lost an — ?” repeated Hermione in a high voice.
“Snape’s work,” said Lupin.
“Snape?” shouted Harry. “You didn’t say —”
“He lost his hood during the chase. Sectumsempra was always a speciality of Snape’s. I wish I could say I’d paid him back in kind, but it was all I could do to keep George on the broom after he was injured, he was losing so much blood.”

——

A Death Eater moved ahead of Snape and raised his wand, pointing it directly at Lupin’s back —
“Sectumsempra!” shouted Snape.
But the spell, intended for the Death Eater’s wand hand, missed and hit George instead —

This scene, however, pisses me off and I do not count it as canon – though not for the reasons you might think. So here is how this scene, if it is ever to be addressed in a roleplay context, should look.

  • Severus did indeed attack George and take off his ear unintentionally. He was deliberate in all actions, including losing his hood; he needed to have the Death Eaters see him in action against his former allies.
  • The point of contention here is Remus knowing of Sectumsempra and referring to it as a specialty of Snape’s.
    • 01. Severus created Sectumsempra and those who would be familiar with the name of the spell let alone anything to do with casting it would be extremely limited. Although some of Severus’ spells got around at school, this one had no reason to as it was created for an extreme situation.
    • 02. Unless we have discussed it, there is absolutely no reason for your character to know the term Sectumsempra if your name is neither Severus Snape nor Harry Potter. ( Hermione and Ron being the outliers here, as Harry showed them the spell. )
    • 03. Violence being a specialty of Severus Snape’s would be fair. Cutting curses would also be acceptable since the nature of Sectumsempra is similar.

“Your tone displeases me! The girl and her friends were foolhardy in the extreme. Thieving from the headmaster!”
“They weren’t thieving,” said Harry. “That sword isn’t Snape’s.”
[..]
“Never mind that! How did Snape punish Ginny, Neville, and Luna?” asked Harry urgently.
“Professor Snape sent them into the Forbidden Forest, to do some work for the oaf, Hagrid.”
“Hagrid’s not an oaf!” said Hermione shrilly.
“And Snape might’ve thought that was a punishment,” said Harry, “but Ginny, Neville, and Luna probably had a good laugh with Hagrid. The Forbidden Forest… they’ve faced plenty worse than the Forbidden Forest, big deal!” He felt relieved; he had been imagining horrors, the Cruciatus Curse at the very least.
[..]
“The Carrows never rumbled how we were communicating, it drove them mad. We used to sneak out at night and put graffiti on the walls: Dumbledore’s Army, Still Recruiting, stuff like that. Snape hated it.”
[..]
a first-year they’d chained up, and they tortured him pretty badly.

Harry has a sound reasoning – but he’s only half right. Severus knew full well what he was doing when he sent them to Hagrid – from the view of the Carrows this would have still been a light punishment, but it would have been viewed as a punishment, just as Phineas suggested.

Severus did all that he could to protect his students during this period, but there was only so much he could do without compromising his position. However there is also a great deal for him to fear with the rebellion of the students. The Carrows are openly torturing students – even first years – and his position as headmaster is not tenable – it is one he can be replaced in at Voldemort’s decree at any point.

For Severus the expression of fear is always done through anger, so his reaction being viewed as widely negative comes from a very genuine place outside of his role as spy in waiting, for he still has one final part to play in Dumbledore’s long game.

“Look … at … me… .” he whispered.
The green eyes found the black, but after a second, something in the depths of the dark pair seemed to vanish, leaving them fixed, blank, and empty. The hand holding Harry thudded to the floor, and Snape moved no more.

Banishing both books and the movies here. While I understand that J.K.R. was determined to push forth an obsessive storyline, my Severus would not have wanted to look a youth in the eyes as he died and frankly, by this point Severus has long since come to see Harry as neither his father nor his mother, but very much his own person. The final words of my Severus were simply, “Now go,” in the hopes that he would die without witness. ( And in the case of my mainverse, so that he could escape )

“It is a miracle you managed to return here!” Snape sounded furious.
[…]
“I am fortunate, extremely fortunate, that I have you, Severus.”
“If you had only summoned me a little earlier, I might have
been able to do more, buy you more time!” said Snape furiously.

Severus and his inability to express fear without anger rearing itself in canon is always a favorite of mine. The pending death of Albus is something he has great reason to fear for political reasons, however it should be noted that by this point my Severus had overcome many of his resentments toward the man, and his fear was coming from a far deeper place. It was the fear of loss, the fear of seeing another person he could have saved if only that is bringing out the sharpest edges of his waspishness once more.

“Are you intending to let him kill you?”
“Certainly not. You must kill me.”
There was a long silence, broken only by an odd clicking noise. Fawkes the phoenix was gnawing a bit of cuttlebone.
“Would you like me to do it now?” asked Snape, his voice heavy with irony. “Or would you like a few moments to compose an epitaph?”

Severus ( as I play him ) coping with an immense amount of bullshit with sass and humor is actually a strong indication that he feels relatively comfortable with Albus. It shows that he does not mind revealing something about himself ( namely the fact he has a considerable sense of humor ) and really, that he is comfortable being himself around the man. And this is poignant mainly because Dumbledore is wholly serious and Severus is in no way prepared for it.

“If you don’t mind dying,” said Snape roughly, “why not let Draco do it?”
“That boy’s soul is not yet so damaged,” said Dumbledore. “I would not have it ripped apart on my account.”
“And my soul, Dumbledore? Mine?”
“You alone know whether it will harm your soul to help an old man avoid pain and humiliation,” said Dumbledore. “I ask this one great favor of you, Severus, because death is coming for me as surely as the Chudley Cannons will finish bottom of this year’s league. I confess I should prefer a quick, painless exit to the protracted and messy affair it will be if, for instance, Greyback is involved — I hear Voldemort has recruited him? Or dear Bellatrix, who likes to play with her food before she eats it.”
[…]
“You refuse to tell me everything, yet you expect that small service of me!” snarled Snape, and real anger flared in the thin face now. “You take a great deal for granted, Dumbledore! Perhaps I have changed my mind!”

This is very poignant for many reasons that escape the canon and tie into my interpretation of Severus so once again we need to break this one down.

  • 01. Severus has spent a lot of time overcoming murderous urges and learning to be – better than that, basically. He has worked hard to overcome the anger inside of him and now he is being asked to murder a man he has come to care for. Naturally, he is reluctant enough to bitterly suggest someone else, and to remind Albus his soul also counts for something. That said, more on Severus and his stances on murder here.
  • 02. This ties into my interpretation of Severus but bringing up Greyback was a low blow. Severus friend, Eric Avery, is slaughtered by Greyback in a most disgusting fashion a few months before this conversation takes place. Albus heard of the recruitment ( and the murder ) from his very own spy – Severus Snape.
  • 03. Severus didn’t want to kill Albus. He really, really wanted to find a way out of this, and eventually had to play mental gymnastics to force himself to do so by making himself see the act as one of euthanasia rather than murder.

“So the boy … the boy must die?” asked Snape quite calmly.
“And Voldemort himself must do it, Severus. That is essential.”
Another long silence. Then Snape said, “I thought … all these years … that we were protecting him for her. For Lily.”
[…]
Snape looked horrified. “You have kept him alive so that he can die at the right moment?”
“Don’t be shocked, Severus. How many men and women have you watched die?”
“Lately, only those whom I could not save,” said Snape. He stood up. “You have used me.”
[…]
“I have spied for you and lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to be to keep Lily Potter’s son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter —”
“But this is touching, Severus,” said Dumbledore seriously. “Have
you grown to care for the boy, after all?”
“For him?” shouted Snape. “Expecto Patronum!”

This has been covered already! Please read the following if you have questions on my stances here:

“Headmaster! They are camping in the Forest of Dean! The Mudblood —”
“Do not use that word!”
“— the Granger girl, then, mentioned the place as she opened her bag and I heard her!”

I am throwing this in here for literally no other reason than to underscore the fact that Severus takes great issue with this slur and has for a very long time.

AID: Half Blood Prince

Alright, now we get into the thick of things as this is the point where Severus goes off script the most often. This post is going to be long and is as a result formed into categories rather than one long ramble like the others.

Appearance Notations

First of all, our view of Severus comes consistently through the eyes of a young boy and later teenager who deeply dislikes him. It is common for us as people to equate one’s personality to negative features – it is the same when we love someone.

An average person can be described in the most hideous or gorgeous fashion depending on how we feel about them; and Harry spends a lot of time focusing on how ugly Severus is, to the point that it feels painfully exaggerated. We know more about what Severus Snape looks like as according to Harry Potter than we do many other more prominent people in the series.

What is remarkable about this is that the one time he is described by a narrator who is not Harry Potter, there are notable things missing. So I’ve compiled every one of Harry’s and the one description without him to make this point.

  • greasy black hair, a hooked nose, and sallow skin. His eyes were black like Hagrid’s, but they had none of Hagrid’s warmth. They were cold and empty and made you think of dark tunnels [ PS / SS ]
  • a thin man with sallow skin, a hooked nose, and greasy, shoulder-length black hair [ COS ]
  • his thin, sallow face | an unpleasant smile from beneath his long, greasy black hair [ POA ]
  • sallow-faced, hook-nosed, greasy-haired Potions master [ GOF ]
  • the dark, greasy-haired head and prominent nose of his least favorite teacher at Hogwarts, Professor Snape. her nose swelled to a beaklike protuberance like Snape’s, Snape looked around at him, his face framed between curtains of greasy black hair. [ OOTP ]
  • a man with long black hair parted in curtains around a sallow face and black eyes. [ HBP, not described by Harry ]
  • the uplit hooked nose and long, black, greasy hair of Severus Snape. [ HBP, described by Harry ]

Harry stresses again and again how greasy Severus is and how giant his nose is, and is constantly remarking on his ugliness. Yet a neutral narrator makes no mention of this – only that his hair is long, his eyes are black, and his skin is sallow. Harry has remarked on all of this as well, but in more exaggerated terms and on multiple instances ( I did not grab all of them cause this is long enough for my point ) The fact is Harry’s descriptions should not be seen as the be all and end all of who Severus is or what he looks like because he has an emotional bias on the subject.

The Vow

This is where I heavily disagree with the film interpretation and stick strictly to books. In the movies, Bellatrix calls him a coward – in the books it is merely implied heavily, indicating a stronger wit and manipulative strength in Bellatrix the films consistently took from her.

What is more, Narcissa is far too refined and pulled together for this particular scene; she completely lost her mind at Snape’s house in the books, and I think her frantic terror, her desperation, and her complete and utter, sheer faith in Severus’ abilities and loyalties all combined with Bellatrix’s implications is what pushed him to agree.

While at this point he is aware of Dumbledore’s condition and the importance of appearing loyal beyond any shadow of doubt to the Dark Lord’s cause, Severus is still consumed with doubts at this point. There are still avenues out of this course and if he makes this vow, he completely closes off any possible route out of Dumbledore’s end game. Making the Unbreakable Vow was ultimately Severus’ choice, and a test of conviction – but it was the devolving state of Narcissa that pushed him – and it is something the films did not deign to include.

Narcissa is meant to be a refined woman, so it makes sense that the films took this position. However, it is the fact that she trusts and respects Severus enough to completely break down in front of him that makes this scene so provocative and telling. She has such faith that he can and will protect her boy, even with Bellatrix ( Her sister! ) nay-saying all around in the background.

And Severus is clearly affected by it, in a Severus way – he won’t look at her – can’t bring himself to do so – and when she is weeping on her knees, he agrees to the Vow and goes on his knees with her. This stands well with my interpretation of him – my Severus just can’t bear to stand above a weeping woman like that – it’s too commanding, too totalitarian, and is the sort of thing more abusive men would do – and while mine may be abusive in some respects, it is never to that extent.

Regarding Patroni

And incidentally,” said Snape, standing back to allow Harry to pass him, “I was interested to see your new Patronus.” He shut the gates in her face with a loud clang and tapped the chains with his wand again, so that they slithered, clinking, back into place. “I think you were better off with the old one,” said Snape, the malice in his voice unmistakable. “The new one looks weak.”

Okay – I love this scene because it actually tells us a great deal without revealing anything at all – in other words, my brain expanded on this moment big time and it’s no longer ‘exactly’ canon but is, still, completely canon.

As I mentioned on my page about Lily, Severus’ patronus is a doe and always will be, because his earliest happy memory is of Lily, and it is his strongest happy memory to date. He has had no experience surpass the joy he felt when he first met and befriended Lily Evans – this is more a reflection on how bitter his existence has been than it is a glimpse into obsession. A patronus only changes with significant new memory to aid it – and as he did not experience any surpassing joy since that day, Severus bears a patronus that serves as a reminder of the crimes he committed in the past, and the innocence he has destroyed.

I cannot stress enough that this moment was not a reflection that he would always love Lily obsessively, but rather that he had no memories to supplant her. If there was any obsession involved, it would be that Severus will never forget his promise to make his amends by keeping her son alive. He did come to care about Harry as an individual, but that was a moot point in his argument at the time; his point was that his oath was to Lily first and foremost, which is why Severus tends to waltz right off script come the ‘big reveal’ that Harry has to die.

Now what makes this moment one of my favorites is not because Severus is being bitter and cruel toward Tonks, but rather because in his own way this is Severus expressing concern through criticism – which is something my boy does a lot of. Lupin is doing all in his power to reject her and here she is, with this new patronus that clearly reflects him, and Severus – being a man with a particularly strong patronus and a firm understanding of Defense Against The Dark Arts born as much from his perusal and understanding of the Dark Arts as a genuine interest in the subject – recognizes when a corporal patronus is wavering.

This is a man whose most powerful corporal patronus is summoned from a memory unchanged in over two decades – seeing Tonks’ form shift took him off balance, because it is rare for patroni to do this and it is a reflection of new joy in the caster. Considering the state of things with her and Lupin, Severus is right to worry that the memory may not remain strong enough for the spell to be of use to Tonks at a critical time, and makes his position known in his own way, because even if it isn’t a kind one – it could well be a crucial one.

The Slug Club

Severus is never said to have been involved with this in any way, however I headcanon that he was involved in his youth. One thing people frequently overlook with the Slug Club is the fact that though Horace works to ‘collect’ students of remarkable parentage, he also brings forth students with incredible potential

This, in turn, grants halfbloods and Muggleborns a vast networking opportunity that they might not otherwise possess. The Slug Club is often something I use to influence Severus’ decision to denounce Voldemort in AU’s where he never became a Death Eater for this precise reason. It introduced him to other people who were able and willing to recognize his talent and nourish his potential in a more positive manner.

There is not a lot to say on this subject from a strictly canonical point of view, but it is something worthwhile to mention. Severus and Horace have a rather intriguing dynamic, which is very rarely explored and frankly this is not the place to do so – nevertheless, it is worth mentioning as it did play a significant role in Severus’ youth.

The Prophesy

“Professor Snape made a terrible mistake. He was still in Lord Voldemort’s employ on the night he heard the first half of Professor Trelawney’s prophecy. Naturally, he hastened to tell his master what he had heard, for it concerned his master most deeply. But he did not know — he had no possible way of knowing
— which boy Voldemort would hunt from then onward, or that the parents he would destroy in his murderous quest were people that Professor Snape knew, that they were your mother and father —”

Harry let out a yell of mirthless laughter. “He hated my dad like he hated Sirius! Haven’t you noticed, Professor, how the people Snape hates tend to end up dead?”

“You have no idea of the remorse Professor Snape felt when he realized how Lord Voldemort had interpreted the prophecy, Harry. I believe it to be the greatest regret of his life and the reason that he returned —” […] Dumbledore did not speak for a moment; he looked as though he was trying to make up his mind about something. At last he said, “I am sure. I trust Severus Snape completely.”

The motivations of Severus Snape always come forth from the point of view of other people, which is quite in keeping with a man whose entire existence relies upon subterfuge. Please understand that everything I am about to say pertains to the motivations of my Severus and as such contains mentions of matters that the books never cover.

The purpose of AID is to break things down and show where my son differs from the canon text and this portion is fundamental to understanding how my interpretation operates as a spy. Some folk may find my take contentious and that is perfectly fine – there are plenty of Severus Snape roleplayers who take a more canon-adherent approach if that is what you prefer. However, my Severus will always approach this situation in the same manner and expecting anything more or less is going to leave you disappointed.

Firstly, it is imperative to understand that at this point in the game, Severus has absolutely no love for Voldemort and considers the cause to be an absolute shit show. However, he values certain elements of being a Death Eater that are important to keep in mind.

  • He has friends in the fold. Some are true believers, others were convinced it would network their careers and vault their value in wizarding society and yet more were pressured in and saw no viable means of escaping. Severus’ relationships with his fellow Death Eaters are hugely defining in his sense of self value and purpose. More on this is covered in Severus Snape: Death Eater under the Social Circle section.
  • He has obtained recognition. Severus has been wildly rewarded for his actions and his loyalty. His skill as a potioneer is deeply valued. His connections among the Death Eaters have provided him assistance in obtaining a position at the Ministry he otherwise might not have gained on account of his social status. Voldemort himself has shown him favor.

As covered in Severus Snape: Death Eater, his greatest goal is to stand as an equal among his peers and being a Death Eater – despite that which he opposes, affords him that ability.

  • It provides him an outlet for aggression. Covered in Severus & Murder, having a direction for the rage and hatred inside of himself is deeply important to Severus, who lacks access to information on positive coping mechanisms as a direct result of the society he is part of. Social awareness and mental health are nonexistent issues in the wizarding world and that is something we cannot forget when approaching our characters.

  • His needs are being met. As much as he opposes matters, Severus has no reason to escape as everything he needs to feel functional and happy is being offered in the fold. He has friends, a sense of family, a means to take out his frustrations, people recognizing he is more than a ‘poor, dirty boy’ but an asset to a team.

He is deeply conscious that he does not wholly belong – he is a halfblood among the elite, and that is not something he can forget. Ultimately however, he has nothing better to escape to. There is no benefit to him leaving after he finds a means to protect his own moral integrity.

Which leads us to the second point. Severus will do whatever it takes to maintain what he has. There are no options before him that are better – he has nothing enticing him to leave the situation he is in. He has spent his life coping with terrible circumstances and learning to compromise himself to make it all bearable – why should adulthood be any different?

So Dumbledore is correct – Severus had absolutely no reason not to bring the information he had obtained straight to Voldemort. He had no reason to conceal it – especially as a man who considers Divination to be an inexact and hokey science at best. He didn’t expect this information to hold a lot of merit, but also saw no reason to conceal it

What is important to understand is that lying to Voldemort has, at this point in time, already come into play for Severus. He is occluding his mind around the man quite frequently in order to protect his own moral integrity, to defend his friends on occasion and to keep his own self out of trouble in various regards. He weighs what is worth hiding and gives up what isn’t constantly, and this did not register as something to conceal.

So when he learned that a) Voldemort was taking this super seriously and b) it pertained to Lily – and yes, at this point, specifically Lily – he immediately took efforts to try and protect her. Not Harry or James – and this is a significant act of nastiness he eventually looks back on and is disgusted by. At the time however, it was not something he balanced in.

Severus did not turn to Dumbledore first. Rather, he went to Voldemort and banked on his own reputation to try and spare a Muggleborn. Perhaps the most significant part of this however is the fact that Voldemort not only did not mock Severus for this but he actually assured Severus and made an honest attempt to get Lily to stand aside on account of this request.

Severus Snape went up to the most vocal Muggle hater in the entire community, asked him to spare a Muggleborn, and it was considered and even attempted, which further illustrates the fact that Severus Snape was valued as a Death Eater and he knew it

However, Severus is no fool. Eventually he began to fear it would not be enough, especially with what was being planned for the Longbottoms. In the end he took his information to Dumbledore out of sheer desperation to ascertain matters – he did not go to the man with the intention of changing sides. That was never even a consideration

What happened was Dumbledore saw an exploit and he took it – and Severus? He was completely aware that he was being maneuvered and manipulated. So he agreed – but just as he lied to Voldemort, so too did he lie to Dumbledore. He gave the man all that he could to prove himself – with a few rather notable exceptions.

  • No record of the activities of his friends ever came to Albus Dumbledore through Severus and by extension at times their families were also shielded.
    • Eric Avery, Lucas Mulciber, Lucius Malfoy were never mentioned. Narcissa, to those who have her as a firm participant, would also be exempt.
    • Bellatrix, Rabastan and Rodolphus would only be mentioned when to not mention them would provide too enormous a gap to make up for.
    • Arguments can be made that the true reason those who tortured the Longbottoms were captured was due to Severus – this, however, is something I prefer to approach on a case by case basis.
  • Simply because he was placed in a position where he had to trade information in order to protect someone he cared about did not mean that Severus:
    • Stopped caring about those among the Death Eaters who treated him with decency and respect
    • Believed his position with Dumbledore was a viable escape route from the Dark Lord
    • Believed he would actually be protected by Dumbledore in any way shape or form even if he gave up everything
    • Stopped performing as a Death Eater or stopped thinking he was safer among them than ‘in the light’ which, to this point, had done him no favors in life and arguably, had indeed done far worse to him.

In the first war, Severus was not nearly as dedicated as Albus intimates to others. It is quite possible that Albus suspected Severus to be less than forthcoming – but in the end he did defend him and he did keep Severus close. This was, quite bluntly, an act of manipulation to keep Severus in a position as a useful tool and again Severus was quite aware he was being maneuvered.

What changed is the fact that Severus, for eleven years prior to Harry Potter’s arrival, proved himself consistently to be a man of a particular moral structure. Albus had time to actually watch and learn the way Severus worked – this allowed him to better maneuver the man and come to trust – to some degree – that he would remain loyal.

Of Severus’ circle, only the Malfoys escaped prison and remained in touch. The Avery family distanced themselves from Severus and cut him off entirely; the Mulcibers disowned Lucas and had no reason to care for Severus. This, therefore, meant that all of Severus’ networking was now being arranged by Dumbledore – and it benefited Dumbledore best to keep Severus isolated. With no reason to go back – and nothing extremely compelling to keep him in the light – Severus was perfectly grey and easily malleable. He was also quite disposable but that’s another meta entirely.

What matters is the faith Dumbledore has in Severus was earned over time. And that faith was not wrong, because over time, Severus truly was wholly dedicated to the destruction of Voldemort and all that for which he stood.

Snape Killed Dumbledore

I have essentially covered this already in another meta so I am simply going to copy in the relevant portion.

The seventh murder of Severus Snape was Albus Dumbledore, being the only one to die at his hand by the wizarding world’s forbidden euthanasia curse. This is – in essence how he sees the Killing Curse he cast on the man. Though he had the hate necessary to cast it, old bitterness to call upon to make it work, Severus needed Albus to die mercifully. It was not in him to do unto Albus the sort of things he used to take joy in.

Not only, because he had grown past that anger, that level of violence – but because he had overcome his hatred of Albus, too. Bitter though he was – Severus cared about Albus, and as the Killing Curse is wont to do, killing Albus stole something from Severus that can never be brought back or truly healed. He destroyed a part of himself in using that curse, just as everyone who casts it must. Though he continues to consider it with contempt, the reasons behind that contempt have shifted.
