“You just missed him,” Severus remarked, noting that she had been lingering in the doorway for too long and determining she must be in search of her bustling husband. Potter had sped in and out of here for information on a new strain ten minutes ago, and Severus had been quick to deflect the auror to upper management rather than get caught in his whirlwind of demands.

In other words, he heard Potter coming and promptly disappeared into the lab after conveniently positioning an unsuspecting coworker directly into the other’s path. 

Having expected the way to be well clear, he had come to resume his regular duties when he had noticed her. After a time noting her linger, he figured he might as well point her off, lest Potter see fit to come collect his wife and interrupt the day further. It wasn’t as though Severus could move quickly these days. 

“I imagine you will find him back on his level, or possibly down in Investigations. He seems a bit more hurried than usual so you might be best off staying in one place and waiting for him to rush through.”
