{ Irrelevant Headcanons }

Things in the Snape household were not always terrible. Tobias was not always cruel and in fact, for the first few years of his life Severus was actually a very happy child. Even when things started falling apart for Tobias there were long grace periods when things would be good, and it honestly took Severus a year at Hogwarts before he developed bitterness and hate toward his father.

There was an air of tension in the Snape household throughout the whole of December, because there was no guarantee if Tobias would snap or not; Severus never learned what was going on with his family, never came to learn the circumstances and in truth, even if he were to do so now the likelihood that he would forgive his father or regret killing him is very slim.

Severus never understood Tobias’ patterns of behaviour like his mother did, so he was honestly more confused and afraid than angry. He internalized a lot of what was going on and was certain that things were somehow his fault, so he would try harder and honestly be at a loss when this failed. After his first year at Hogwarts, Severus had been exposed to so many children from so many lifestyles, and he had a feeling things were not normal.

After his first summer, he came back t Hogwarts bruised and Lucas immediately informed him he would teach him how to fight so that would stop. Eric procured healing balms by Severus’ estimation of pure magic ( He stole them and Severus honestly took another two years to realize Eric was a fabulous thief. ) and even Destin seemed disturbed. It was after that year that Severus anger started, and things at home got a lot worse when Severus started rebelling.

Honestly I intended for this headcanon to be about some of Tobias good parenting moments but it devolved on me. I need to stress something though, and I feel like it’s the grayest line but end of the day – Tobias was not a monster without a cause. He didn’t attack his family because of two dimensional reasons; that does not excuse what he did, but rather is meant to enforce the fact that he did not deserve to be brutally murdered.

Tobias had choices and he dug his own grave, just as Severus had choices and the one he made is not right simply because it was wrapped in vengeance and catharsis.

Now I am just picturing teen sev’s bedroom covered in these artist posters *3* such presh

Honestly I wish because that would be hilarious and adorable and fantastic blackmail material for his mom to tell his future dates about and his friends to rag on but –

Severus actually had very little wall space because his room was mostly bed, dresser and wardrobe. They lived in one of those houses where the roof slants the room, and because Tobias kept getting blackmailed out of every coin he made the upkeep was pretty terrible. Paint and wallpaper peeling, all kinds of plumbing issues, the summer bug problem was atrocious.

Severus learned pretty early on not to have anything valuable out where it could be ripped, shattered or thrown so he’d be unlikely to plaster posters up and give Tobias anything else to wreck. As a result his room was eerily unlived in even for a kid who spent most of the year in boarding school. He kept all his school supplies locked in his trunk, only the broken things and that which didn’t fit went into drawers or the wardrobe, and there was only the most basic things on top of the dresser – hair brush with ties wrapped around the handle, basic hygiene products and MAYBE if he was brave, a book.

Thankfully none of his friends ever saw his house aside from Lily and even she wasn’t allowed in because listen, Eileen knew who she married and who she came back to. She knew things weren’t good and she was very protective of Tobias. She knew better than to let neighbors learn what went on behind closed doors. So nobody knows the absolute void Severus returned to in the summers, and really that’s probably for the best.
